The idea

Time relations: vor der Übergabe (before), nach der Übergabe (after), both with the dative. “Im Anschluss an” plus accusative means “directly after”: im Anschluss an die Übergabe. Vorher and danach are adverbs that stand alone without a noun. The verb folgen takes a dative object: dem Ablauf folgen. In many care teams the handover (Übergabe) between shifts is a fixed routine, so it is a natural reference point for other appointments.

Other ways to say it

“Ist die Schulung direkt nach der Übergabe?” – Simple and neutral; uses sein instead of beginnen.

“Wann genau fängt die Schulung an?” – Open question; anfangen is the everyday word for beginnen.

“Wo findet die Schulung statt, im Schulungsraum?” – Checks the room with a quick confirmation at the end.

Examples

  • Beginnt die Schulung vor oder nach der Übergabe?Does the training begin before or after handover?
  • Sie ist im Anschluss an die Übergabe geplant. It is scheduled after handover.
  • Müssen wir vorher den Raum wechseln?Do we need to change rooms first?
  • Ja, sie findet im Schulungsraum statt.Yes, it takes place in the training room.
  • Ich notiere Reihenfolge, Ort und Beginn.I will note the sequence, location and start time.
  • Dann können neue Kollegen dem Ablauf folgen. Then new colleagues can follow the schedule.

Watch out

“Dann können neue Kollegen den Ablauf folgen.” → “Dann können neue Kollegen dem Ablauf folgen.”: Folgen is one of the common verbs with a dative object, like helfen and danken. English “follow the process” has a direct object, so learners use the accusative den.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Does the training begin before or after handover?

    Show answer or example answer

Beginnt die Schulung vor oder nach der Übergabe?

A yes/no question with “Beginnt” first. “Vor oder nach der Übergabe” shares one dative noun between both prepositions.

  2. Put the words in order: den / Müssen / Raum / vorher / wechseln / wir

    Show answer or example answer

Müssen wir vorher den Raum wechseln?

The modal “Müssen” starts the question, the infinitive “wechseln” ends it. “Vorher” is an adverb meaning before the training, and “den Raum” is accusative.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then new colleagues can follow the schedule.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann können neue Kollegen dem Ablauf folgen.

“Dann” opens, the modal “können” follows, and the infinitive “folgen” closes the sentence. Folgen takes the dative, so it is “dem Ablauf”.

Use it today

A hygiene training is announced for Thursday but without a time. Ask your shift lead whether it is before or after the handover and in which room.
