The idea

Die Abholung (pick-up), die Abfahrt (departure) and die Ankunft (arrival) are different moments; messages should name one explicitly. “Für die Abholung” uses für plus accusative for the purpose of the time. The simple past passive “wurde … bestätigt” is common in written updates. “Eine Frage an jemanden richten” means to direct a question to someone, with an plus accusative. Ausdrücklich (explicitly) signals that the wording leaves no doubt.

Other ways to say it

“Der Fahrdienst holt um zehn Uhr ab.” – Active and simple; names who does the pick-up.

“Abholung bestätigt: 10:00 Uhr.” – Telegraphic note style for a board or chat.

“Gemeint ist die Abholzeit, nicht die Ankunft.” – Clarifies the exact meaning when passing the message on.

Examples

  • Für die Abholung wurde zehn Uhr bestätigt.Ten o’clock has been confirmed for collection.
  • Handelt es sich um die Ankunft oder die Abfahrt?Does that mean arrival or departure?
  • Die Nachricht nennt ausdrücklich die Abholzeit. The message explicitly says collection time.
  • Dann geben wir diese Formulierung unverändert weiter. Then let us pass on that wording unchanged.

  • Offene Fragen richten wir an die zuständige Koordination. We will direct outstanding questions to the responsible coordinator.

Watch out

“Offene Fragen richten wir zu der Koordination.” → “Offene Fragen richten wir an die Koordination.”: Richten in this sense is fixed with an plus accusative: eine Frage an jemanden richten. Zu is the preposition for going to a person, not for addressing a question.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Ten o’clock has been confirmed for collection.

    Show answer or example answer

Für die Abholung wurde zehn Uhr bestätigt.

“Für die Abholung” opens the sentence, so “wurde” is second. The subject “zehn Uhr” stands between the auxiliary and the participle “bestätigt”.

  2. Put the words in order: Abholzeit / ausdrücklich / die / Die / Nachricht / nennt

    Show answer or example answer

Die Nachricht nennt ausdrücklich die Abholzeit.

“Nennt” (names) is the neutral verb for what a message says. “Ausdrücklich” stresses that the text says pick-up time, so there is nothing to interpret.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We will direct outstanding questions to the responsible coordinator.

    Show answer or example answer

Offene Fragen richten wir an die zuständige Koordination.

The object “Offene Fragen” comes first for emphasis, then “richten wir”. “An die zuständige Koordination” is accusative after an in this fixed phrase.

Use it today

The transport service confirmed a 9:30 pick-up for a resident’s appointment. Write a message for the team board that states the pick-up time and makes clear it is not the appointment time.
