The idea

“Am Empfang” (at reception) uses an plus dative, contracted to am. “Für wen ist sie angemeldet?” uses für plus the accusative wen. The participles angekündigt and angemeldet describe arrangements made beforehand. “Beschränken wir …” is a wir imperative: verb first, then wir, like English “let’s”. In care settings, many teams pass on only what the receiving person needs, because information about residents and visitors is treated as confidential.

Other ways to say it

“Ihr Besuch ist da und wartet vorne am Empfang.” – Friendly and direct; said to the colleague the visitor is registered for.

“Am Empfang wartet Besuch für Sie.” – Short and neutral; good on the phone or intercom.

“Die Besucherin für Zimmer zwölf ist eingetroffen.” – More formal; eintreffen is written-style “to arrive”.

Examples

  • Die angekündigte Besucherin wartet am Empfang. The expected visitor is waiting at reception.
  • Für wen ist sie angemeldet?Whom is she registered to visit?
  • Die Zuordnung steht auf dieser Besuchsnotiz. The assignment is on this visit note.
  • Dann informiere ich die zuständige Kollegin. Then I will inform the responsible colleague.
  • Ich habe noch keine weiteren Angaben weitergegeben.I have not passed on any further details yet.
  • Gut, beschränken wir die Nachricht auf die Ankunft.Good; let us limit the message to the arrival.

Watch out

“Die Besucherin wartet auf dem Empfang.” → “Die Besucherin wartet am Empfang.”: Reception is a place you stand at, not on, so German uses an plus dative: am Empfang. Learners mix up auf and an because English uses “at” for both.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The expected visitor is waiting at reception.

    Show answer or example answer

Die angekündigte Besucherin wartet am Empfang.

“Die angekündigte Besucherin” uses a participle as an adjective: the visitor who was announced. “Wartet am Empfang” gives the place with an plus dative.

  2. Put the words in order: auf / Besuchsnotiz / Die / dieser / steht / Zuordnung

    Show answer or example answer

Die Zuordnung steht auf dieser Besuchsnotiz.

“Die Zuordnung” here means which person the visit belongs to. It “steht” on the note, the usual verb for written information.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; let us limit the message to the arrival.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, beschränken wir die Nachricht auf die Ankunft.

A wir imperative: “beschränken wir” works like “let’s limit”. “Sich beschränken auf” or “etwas beschränken auf” takes auf with the accusative: auf die Ankunft.
