The idea

A Termin is a fixed appointment, at a doctor’s practice, an authority, a bank or a job interview. Punctuality is generally expected, and many people arrive five to ten minutes early, especially when they first need to check in at reception or pass security. At doctors’ practices, waiting after the appointment time is still common. Some letters say explicitly when to arrive, and that information counts more than any general rule. Grammar: “einplanen” is separable, so it splits in a main clause: “Ich plane Zeit ein”.

Other ways to say it

“Wie früh sollte ich vor dem Termin da sein?” – Neutral question about arrival time; “sollte” is polite.

“Muss ich vorher noch Formulare ausfüllen?” – Practical question at doctors’ practices and offices.

“Ich habe um neun einen Termin bei Frau Dr. Wolf.” – Standard sentence for checking in at reception.

Examples

  • Soll ich um neun ankommen oder soll das Gespräch dann beginnen?Should I arrive at nine, or should the conversation begin then?
  • Bei diesem Termin beginnt um neun das Gespräch.At this appointment, the conversation begins at nine.
  • Dann plane ich für die Anmeldung vorher etwas Zeit ein. Then I will allow some time for registration beforehand.
  • Bitte klären Sie die nötige Ankunftszeit direkt mit dem Empfang. Please clarify the required arrival time directly with reception.
  • Ich möchte mich nach den konkreten Angaben richten.I would like to follow the specific information.
  • Genau, der einzelne Termin ist wichtiger als eine pauschale Annahme.Exactly; the particular appointment matters more than a blanket assumption.

Watch out

“Ich habe ein Date beim Arzt.” → “Ich habe einen Termin beim Arzt.”: English “appointment” or “date” has several German equivalents. An appointment with a doctor or office is “der Termin”; “Date” in German means a romantic meeting, and “Datum” only means a calendar date.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Should I arrive at nine, or should the conversation begin then?

    Show answer or example answer

Soll ich um neun ankommen oder soll das Gespräch dann beginnen?

Two questions are joined by “oder”, each with the modal “soll” first and its infinitive last: “ankommen”, “beginnen”. “Dann” refers back to “um neun”.

  2. Put the words in order: Anmeldung / Dann / die / ein / etwas / für / ich / plane / vorher / Zeit

    Show answer or example answer

Dann plane ich für die Anmeldung vorher etwas Zeit ein.

“Einplanen” splits into “plane … ein”. “Für die Anmeldung” (for checking in) is accusative after für, and “etwas Zeit” means “some time”.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Exactly; the particular appointment matters more than a blanket assumption.

    Show answer or example answer

Genau, der einzelne Termin ist wichtiger als eine pauschale Annahme.

“Wichtiger als” is a comparison with als. “Der einzelne Termin” is the subject, and “eine pauschale Annahme” means a blanket assumption that ignores the details.
