The idea

An Einstand is the occasion on which someone new at a workplace is welcomed. In many German workplaces the newcomer traditionally “gibt einen Einstand”: brings cake, pretzels or snacks, or invites colleagues for a drink within the first weeks. Its counterpart is the Ausstand when someone leaves. Some teams turn it around and welcome the new person themselves, and others skip it entirely, so asking is sensible. Grammar: “dass ihr … plant” sends the verb to the end, and “dafür” (for that) points back to the Einstand.

Other ways to say it

“Wie macht ihr das hier normalerweise mit dem Einstand?” – Casual and open; invites colleagues to describe their usual practice.

“Ist es bei euch üblich, dass man zum Einstand etwas mitbringt?” – Useful when you are the newcomer and want to know what is expected of you.

“Darf ich mich an der Planung für den Einstand beteiligen?” – Polite offer to help; sich beteiligen an takes the dative.

Examples

  • Ich habe gehört, dass ihr einen kleinen Einstand plant.I heard that you are planning a small welcome gathering for a new colleague.
  • Ja, wir möchten die neue Kollegin kennenlernen.Yes, we would like to get to know the new colleague.
  • Gibt es dafür bei euch eine bestimmte Absprache?Do you have a particular arrangement for that?
  • Wir fragen zuerst, womit sie sich wohlfühlt. We first ask what she feels comfortable with.
  • Dann gehe ich nicht von einer festen Verpflichtung aus. Then I will not assume a fixed obligation.
  • Genau, wir gestalten den Anlass gemeinsam.Exactly; we will organize the occasion together.

Watch out

“Ich habe gehört, dass ihr plant einen kleinen Einstand.” → “Ich habe gehört, dass ihr einen kleinen Einstand plant.”: A dass-clause is a subordinate clause, so its conjugated verb moves to the very end. English word order (“that you are planning a gathering”) leads learners to put the verb straight after the subject.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I heard that you are planning a small welcome gathering for a new colleague.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich habe gehört, dass ihr einen kleinen Einstand plant.

The main clause “Ich habe gehört” is in the perfect tense; the dass-clause after the comma ends with “plant”, and “einen kleinen Einstand” is accusative masculine.

  2. Put the words in order: Absprache / bei / bestimmte / dafür / eine / es / euch / Gibt

    Show answer or example answer

Gibt es dafür bei euch eine bestimmte Absprache?

“Gibt es” starts a yes/no question with the verb first. “Dafür” replaces “für den Einstand”, and “bei euch” means “in your team”.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Exactly; we will organize the occasion together.

    Show answer or example answer

Genau, wir gestalten den Anlass gemeinsam.

“Einen Anlass gestalten” means to shape or organise an occasion; “den Anlass” is masculine accusative, and “gemeinsam” at the end stresses that everyone decides together.

Use it today

You start a new job next week. Write two sentences to a friendly colleague asking whether newcomers there usually bring something for their Einstand and what would suit the team.
