The idea

German has two forms of address: Sie with Herr or Frau plus surname, and du with first names. Traditionally, workplaces used Sie, and moving to du was offered by the more senior person. Today many companies, especially start-ups, tech and international teams, use du with first names from the start, while authorities, law firms, banks and many established companies often keep Sie. Mixed forms exist too, such as first name with Sie. Because practice varies by team, asking is normal. Grammar: “angesprochen werden” is a passive infinitive after the modal möchten.

Other ways to say it

“Duzen wir uns hier im Team, oder siezen wir uns?” – Neutral question using the verbs duzen and siezen.

“Wollen wir uns duzen?” – Offer to switch to du; traditionally made by the more senior person.

“Ist es für Sie in Ordnung, wenn ich Sie mit Vornamen anspreche?” – Polite way to propose first name with Sie.

Examples

  • Wie möchten Sie in unserer neuen Projektgruppe angesprochen werden? How would you like to be addressed in our new project group?
  • Für mich passt im Projekt die Anrede mit Nachnamen.Addressing me by surname suits me in the project.
  • Dann übernehme ich nicht automatisch die Gewohnheit aus meiner alten Gruppe. Then I will not automatically adopt the habit from my old group.
  • Danke, die Teams haben dazu unterschiedliche Absprachen.Thank you; teams have different arrangements about that.
  • Falls sich Ihre Präferenz ändert, sagen Sie gern Bescheid. If your preference changes, please let me know.
  • So richten wir uns nach der tatsächlich vereinbarten Anrede. That way we follow the form of address actually agreed.

Watch out

“Guten Morgen, Frau Anna!” → “Guten Morgen, Frau Becker!”: “Herr” and “Frau” go with the surname, never with the first name alone. If you use the first name, drop Herr or Frau: “Guten Morgen, Anna!”

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: How would you like to be addressed in our new project group?

    Show answer or example answer

Wie möchten Sie in unserer neuen Projektgruppe angesprochen werden?

The question word “wie” comes first, then the modal “möchten Sie”. The passive infinitive “angesprochen werden” closes the sentence, and “in unserer neuen Projektgruppe” is dative feminine.

  2. Put the words in order: alten / aus / automatisch / Dann / die / Gewohnheit / Gruppe / ich / meiner / nicht / übernehme

    Show answer or example answer

Dann übernehme ich nicht automatisch die Gewohnheit aus meiner alten Gruppe.

“Übernehmen” is inseparable in the sense of “adopt”, so no prefix moves to the end. “Nicht automatisch” negates the automatic transfer, and “aus meiner alten Gruppe” is dative after aus.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That way we follow the form of address actually agreed.

    Show answer or example answer

So richten wir uns nach der tatsächlich vereinbarten Anrede.

“Sich richten nach” means to follow or go by something and takes the dative. “Der tatsächlich vereinbarten Anrede” places the adverb “tatsächlich” before the participle adjective.
