Da and wo compounds refer to things or situations while preserving the preposition required by the verb.

The idea

Add r before a vowel: daran, woran, darüber. For people, keep the preposition plus personal or interrogative pronoun: auf sie, auf wen. Do not replace a person with darauf.

Watch out

Use da- and wo-compounds for things or ideas, not as replacements for people. Compare auf die Antwort warten → darauf warten with auf Lea warten → auf sie warten.
