The idea

Seit plus present tense describes something that started in the past and continues: “zeigt seit eben”. English uses the present perfect here. Stehen describes text on a display or sign: “Dort steht Störung.” Die Störung is a technical fault. Der Wortlaut is the exact wording. “Etwas an jemanden melden” means to report to someone. Beobachtet is the participle of beobachten, used as an adjective.

Other ways to say it

“Die Kaffeemaschine ist gerade ausgefallen.” – Neutral; ausfallen means to stop working.

“Auf dem Display steht Fehler 12.” – Neutral and precise; quotes the message.

“Die Maschine spinnt schon wieder.” – Colloquial; spinnen means to act up. Not for formal reports.

Watch out

“Die Maschine hat seit eben eine Fehlermeldung gezeigt.” → “Die Maschine zeigt seit eben eine Fehlermeldung.”: For a state that started in the past and is still going on, German uses seit with the present tense. The perfect copies English “has been showing” and suggests it has stopped.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The machine has been showing an error message just now.

    Show answer or example answer

    Show answer or example answer

Dort steht Störung, zusammen mit einer Nummer.
