The idea

With guests, use Sie and its possessive Ihr, always capitalised. Leider (unfortunately) sits after the verb and softens bad news. “Eine Zusage machen” means to make a commitment. “Die Wartezeit einschätzen” means to estimate the waiting time. Inzwischen means while we wait. Sobald introduces a time clause with the verb at the end: “sobald es Neuigkeiten gibt”. Es gibt plus accusative means there is or there are.

Other ways to say it

“Es dauert leider noch einen Moment.” – Polite and vague; common when the wait is short.

“Möchten Sie solange an der Bar Platz nehmen?” – Formal and welcoming; offers a waiting place.

“Entschuldigen Sie bitte die Verzögerung.” – Formal apology; suits longer waits.

Examples

  • Ihr Tisch ist leider noch nicht frei.Unfortunately, your table is not available yet.
  • Können Sie die Wartezeit schon einschätzen? Can you estimate the waiting time yet?
  • Eine genaue Zusage kann ich noch nicht machen.I cannot make a precise commitment yet.
  • Wo können wir inzwischen warten?Where can we wait in the meantime?
  • Ich frage nach einem geeigneten Warteplatz.I will ask about a suitable waiting place.
  • Bitte informieren Sie uns, sobald es Neuigkeiten gibt. Please inform us as soon as there is news.

Watch out

“Bitte informieren Sie uns, sobald es gibt Neuigkeiten.” → “Bitte informieren Sie uns, sobald es Neuigkeiten gibt.”: Sobald starts a subordinate clause, so the finite verb gibt goes to the end. Learners keep the main-clause order of “es gibt” as a fixed chunk.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Unfortunately, your table is not available yet.

    Show answer or example answer

Ihr Tisch ist leider noch nicht frei.

Ihr (formal your) belongs to the subject Ihr Tisch; leider follows the verb, and “noch nicht frei” describes the current state.

  2. Put the words in order: Eine / genaue / ich / kann / machen / nicht / noch / Zusage

    Show answer or example answer

Eine genaue Zusage kann ich noch nicht machen.

The object eine genaue Zusage opens the sentence for emphasis; kann stays second and machen closes it.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please inform us as soon as there is news.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte informieren Sie uns, sobald es Neuigkeiten gibt.

Sie imperative with bitte, then a sobald clause with gibt at the end. Uns is the accusative object of informieren.
