The idea

“Zu etwas gehören” means to belong to something; zu takes the dative, but Tisch with a number usually has no article: zu Tisch zwölf, an Tisch zwölf. Der Bon (Küchenbon) is the order slip printed for the kitchen. The passive “wurde … bestellt” focuses on the order, not on who ordered. Aber in the middle of the clause marks the contradiction. Hinausbringen is separable: “Ich bringe das Gericht noch nicht hinaus.”

Other ways to say it

“Für welchen Tisch ist das?” – Informal and quick; the usual question at the pass.

“Zwölf wie eins-zwei oder zwanzig wie zwei-null?” – Practical in noise: spelling out the digits avoids confusion.

“Der Bon passt nicht zu dem, was an Tisch zwölf bestellt wurde.” – Neutral; states the mismatch in one sentence.

Examples

  • Gehört dieses Gericht zu Tisch zwölf oder zwanzig?Does this dish belong to table twelve or twenty?
  • Auf dem Küchenbon steht Tisch zwölf.The kitchen slip says table twelve.
  • An Tisch zwölf wurde aber etwas anderes bestellt. But something else was ordered at table twelve.
  • Dann vergleichen wir die beiden Bons. Then let us compare both slips.
  • Ich bringe das Gericht noch nicht hinaus.I will not take the dish out yet.
  • Gut, wir klären zuerst die Zuordnung.Good; let us clarify the assignment first.

Watch out

“Gehört dieses Gericht zum Tisch zwölf oder zwanzig?” → “Gehört dieses Gericht zu Tisch zwölf oder zwanzig?”: When a number identifies the table, German usually drops the article, just as with Zimmer vierzehn or Gleis drei. “Zum Tisch zwölf” sounds unidiomatic in restaurant talk.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Does this dish belong to table twelve or twenty?

    Show answer or example answer

Gehört dieses Gericht zu Tisch zwölf oder zwanzig?

Yes-no question with gehört first. Zu takes Tisch without an article because a number follows, and oder offers the two possible tables.

  2. Put the words in order: aber / An / anderes / bestellt / etwas / Tisch / wurde / zwölf

    Show answer or example answer

An Tisch zwölf wurde aber etwas anderes bestellt.

Passive in the simple past: wurde plus bestellt. Aber stands inside the clause and contrasts it with the kitchen slip; etwas anderes is the subject.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; let us clarify the assignment first.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, wir klären zuerst die Zuordnung.

Gut acknowledges the plan. Zuerst gives priority, and die Zuordnung means which dish goes to which table.

Use it today

A pizza arrives with the slip for table 15, but table 15 ordered pasta. Write two sentences you would say to the kitchen to sort it out.
