The idea

Ausverkauft (sold out) works like an adjective after sein. “Eine Bestellung aufnehmen” means to take an order; in the passive: “wurde … aufgenommen”. Gerade noch means only just, at the last moment. Eingehen (separable, perfect with sein) describes orders coming in: “Sind … eingegangen?” “Jemanden nach etwas fragen” uses nach plus dative: “nach den verfügbaren Gerichten”.

Other ways to say it

“Das Pilzgericht ist aus.” – Informal kitchen German; aus sein means run out.

“Vom Pilzgericht haben wir heute nichts mehr.” – Neutral; also fine to say to guests.

“Leider ist das Pilzgericht heute schon vergriffen.” – Polite and slightly formal; vergriffen means no longer available.

Examples

  • Das Pilzgericht ist für heute ausverkauft. The mushroom dish is sold out for today.
  • Sind bereits neue Bestellungen eingegangen?Have any new orders already come in?
  • Eine Bestellung wurde gerade noch aufgenommen. One order has just been taken.
  • Dann informieren wir diesen Tisch zuerst. Then let us inform that table first.
  • Welche bestätigte Alternative können wir anbieten?Which confirmed alternative can we offer?
  • Ich frage die Küche nach den verfügbaren Gerichten.I will ask the kitchen about the available dishes.

Watch out

“Ich frage die Küche für die verfügbaren Gerichte.” → “Ich frage die Küche nach den verfügbaren Gerichten.”: English “ask for” leads learners to für, but asking about something is “nach etwas fragen” with the dative, and the plural noun adds -n.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The mushroom dish is sold out for today.

    Show answer or example answer

Das Pilzgericht ist für heute ausverkauft.

Sein plus ausverkauft describes the state. “Für heute” limits it to the day; Pilzgericht is a compound of Pilz and Gericht.

  2. Put the words in order: aufgenommen / Bestellung / Eine / gerade / noch / wurde

    Show answer or example answer

Eine Bestellung wurde gerade noch aufgenommen.

Passive in the simple past with wurde plus aufgenommen. Gerade noch means just in time, before the dish ran out.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will ask the kitchen about the available dishes.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich frage die Küche nach den verfügbaren Gerichten.

Fragen has two parts: the person in the accusative (die Küche) and the topic with nach plus dative (nach den verfügbaren Gerichten).

Use it today
