The idea

Unteres and oberes are adjectives from unter and ober and take endings: ein unteres Bett, das obere Bett. Wäre (Konjunktiv II of sein) softens a statement: Das wäre schwierig. Zuteilen + dative (to assign to someone) appears in the passive: Ist das Bett jemandem zugeteilt? Warten auf + accusative means to wait for. Die Belegung is the occupancy list.

Other ways to say it

“Könnte ich unten schlafen?” – Short, friendly request at the hostel desk.

“Kann ich mit jemandem das Bett tauschen?” – Asks about swapping with another guest.

Examples

  • Ist noch ein unteres Bett frei?Is a lower bunk still available?
  • Ich sehe mir die Belegung an.I will look at the occupancy.
  • Ein oberes Bett wäre für mich schwierig. An upper bunk would be difficult for me.
  • Ist das untere Bett bereits jemandem zugeteilt?Has the lower bunk already been assigned to someone?
  • Das möchte ich vor dem Auspacken klären.I would like to clarify that before unpacking.
  • Warten Sie bitte kurz auf die Bestätigung. Please wait briefly for confirmation.

Watch out

“Warten Sie bitte kurz für die Bestätigung.” → “Warten Sie bitte kurz auf die Bestätigung.”: Warten always takes auf + accusative for what you wait for. English “wait for” pushes learners towards für, which is wrong here.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is a lower bunk still available?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist noch ein unteres Bett frei?

Ist opens the yes/no question. Ein unteres Bett is the subject, and noch frei means still free, not already assigned.

  2. Put the words in order: Bett / Ein / für / mich / oberes / schwierig / wäre

    Show answer or example answer

Ein oberes Bett wäre für mich schwierig.

Wäre makes the reason gentle. Für mich limits it to you, and schwierig names the difficulty without further detail.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please wait briefly for confirmation.

    Show answer or example answer

Warten Sie bitte kurz auf die Bestätigung.

Warten Sie is a formal imperative, bitte softens it. Kurz means briefly, and auf die Bestätigung is accusative after warten auf.

You check into a six-bed dorm and see your bed is an upper bunk. Ask the staff whether a lower bed is free and give a short reason.
