Könnte, hätte, wäre and würde can make a request or wish less direct.

The idea

With könnte or würde, the main infinitive stays at the end. Ich hätte gern is a useful ordering pattern. Tone and context still affect politeness.

Watch out

After könnte or würde, do not conjugate the main verb again: Könnten Sie helfen? and Würdest du warten? Hätte gern can express a wish without an additional infinitive.

Try it yourself

  1. ___ Sie mir helfen? (Könnten / Können; besonders höflich)

  2. Ich ___ gern einen Tee. (hätte / habe; höflicher Wunsch)

    Show answer or example answer

    hätte

Answer: “hätte”. The Konjunktiv II form makes the request or wish less direct.
