The idea

Enden (to end) is a regular verb: es endet. An oder-question offers two options and needs no question word. Abräumen (to clear away) is separable and appears here in the passive: wird abgeräumt. Sollten expresses advice, softer than müssen. Einplanen (to allow for) is separable. Neben + dative gives a fixed location: neben der Rezeption.

Other ways to say it

“Bis wann kann man morgens frühstücken?” – Neutral, general question about breakfast hours.

“Muss man um zehn schon fertig sein?” – Asks directly whether you must have finished by then.

Examples

  • Endet um zehn der Einlass oder das Frühstück?Does entry end at ten, or does breakfast finish then?
  • Um zehn wird das Buffet abgeräumt. The buffet is cleared at ten.
  • Dann sollten wir deutlich vorher kommen. Then we should come well before that.
  • Ja, planen Sie genug Zeit zum Essen ein.Yes, allow enough time to eat.
  • Wo findet das Frühstück morgen statt?Where will breakfast take place tomorrow?
  • Im Raum rechts neben der Rezeption. In the room to the right of reception.

Watch out

“Im Raum rechts neben die Rezeption.” → “Im Raum rechts neben der Rezeption.”: Neben is a two-way preposition. For a fixed position, as here, it takes the dative: neben der Rezeption. The accusative is only for movement: Stell den Koffer neben die Rezeption.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Does entry end at ten, or does breakfast finish then?

    Show answer or example answer

Endet um zehn der Einlass oder das Frühstück?

Endet opens the question and um zehn gives the time. The subject comes after the time, offered as two options joined by oder.

  2. Put the words in order: Dann / deutlich / kommen / sollten / vorher / wir

    Show answer or example answer

Dann sollten wir deutlich vorher kommen.

Sollten is advice. Deutlich vorher means clearly before ten, and kommen ends the sentence as the infinitive.

  3. Write this sentence in German: In the room to the right of reception.

    Show answer or example answer

Im Raum rechts neben der Rezeption.

A verbless answer to a where-question. Im Raum is dative, and rechts neben der Rezeption locates the room precisely.

Use it today

At check-in you read “Frühstück 7–10 Uhr”. Ask whether ten is the last entry or the end of the buffet, and where breakfast is served.
