The idea

Access vocabulary: der Zugriff (access), der Lesezugriff (read access), der Schreibzugriff or Bearbeitungsrechte (write access), die Berechtigung (permission), beantragen (to apply for). One modal can govern two infinitives joined by aber: “kann … sehen, aber nicht öffnen”. “Welche Meldung wird Ihnen angezeigt?” is a werden passive with a dative: shown to you. Many IT teams grant the smallest access needed, so naming the task speeds things up.

Other ways to say it

“Beim Öffnen des Ordners erscheint „Zugriff verweigert“.” – Neutral; quotes the error right away.

“Könnten Sie mir Leserechte für den Projektordner geben?” – Polite direct request with Konjunktiv II.

“Mir fehlt die Berechtigung für diesen Ordner.” – Short; fehlen takes the person in the dative.

Examples

  • Ich kann den Projektordner sehen, aber nicht öffnen.I can see the project folder but cannot open it.
  • Welche Meldung wird Ihnen angezeigt? What message do you see?
  • Dort steht Zugriff verweigert. It says access denied.
  • Welche Berechtigung benötigen Sie für Ihre Aufgabe? What permission do you need for your task?
  • Ich brauche zunächst nur Lesezugriff.I initially only need read access.
  • Dann beantragen wir genau diese Berechtigung. Then let us request that specific permission.

Watch out

“Ich kann den Projektordner sehen, aber nicht zu öffnen.” → “Ich kann den Projektordner sehen, aber nicht öffnen.”: Modal verbs take a bare infinitive without zu. Learners add zu in the second part because the clause looks like a separate idea, but kann still governs it.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I can see the project folder but cannot open it.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich kann den Projektordner sehen, aber nicht öffnen.

“Kann” governs two infinitives: “sehen” and, after aber, “nicht öffnen”. The object “den Projektordner” is shared and need not be repeated.

  2. Put the words in order: Dort / steht / verweigert / Zugriff

    Show answer or example answer

    Dort steht Zugriff verweigert.

“Dort” refers to the error window. “Zugriff verweigert” is the quoted message, a short participle phrase typical of system texts.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us request that specific permission.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann beantragen wir genau diese Berechtigung.

“Dann” opens, “beantragen” follows, then “wir”. “Genau diese Berechtigung” stresses that only read access is requested, nothing more.

Use it today

You can see the team’s budget folder but get an error when opening it. Write a short ticket that describes what happens, quotes the message and asks for read access only.
