The idea

Spreadsheet vocabulary: die Zeile (row), die Spalte (column), der Filter, ausblenden/einblenden (hide/show), die Ansicht (view), die Auswahl (selection). Ausblenden is separable, and its participle is ausgeblendet. “Es werden nur offene Vorgänge angezeigt” is an impersonal passive with es as a placeholder. Einstellen (to set) describes filter settings: “Welche Auswahl ist eingestellt?” In German, “Spalte” and “Zeile” are easily swapped by learners: Zeile runs across, Spalte runs down.

Other ways to say it

“Ist vielleicht ein Filter gesetzt?” – Casual guess; einen Filter setzen means to apply one.

“Können Sie alle Filter zurücksetzen?” – Polite request to clear filters.

“Die Ansicht zeigt nur einen Teil der Einträge.” – Neutral description of the visible effect.

Examples

  • Fehlen die Zeilen oder sind sie nur ausgeblendet? Are the rows missing or merely hidden?
  • In dieser Spalte ist ein Filter aktiv.A filter is active in this column.
  • Dann zeigt die Ansicht nicht alle Einträge.Then the view does not show all entries.
  • Welche Auswahl ist gerade eingestellt?Which selection is currently applied?
  • Es werden nur offene Vorgänge angezeigt.Only open cases are displayed.
  • Das erklärt die kleinere sichtbare Zeilenzahl. That explains the smaller number of visible rows.

Watch out

“In dieser Zeile ist ein Filter aktiv.” → “In dieser Spalte ist ein Filter aktiv.”: Filters sit on columns, die Spalten, which run vertically. Learners often mix up Zeile (row) and Spalte (column), which sends the colleague to the wrong place.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Are the rows missing or merely hidden?

    Show answer or example answer

Fehlen die Zeilen oder sind sie nur ausgeblendet?

Two yes/no questions joined by oder: “Fehlen die Zeilen” and “sind sie nur ausgeblendet”. Nur limits the second option to something harmless.

  2. Put the words in order: alle / Ansicht / Dann / die / Einträge / nicht / zeigt

    Show answer or example answer

Dann zeigt die Ansicht nicht alle Einträge.

“Dann” opens, “zeigt” follows, then the subject. “Nicht alle Einträge” negates the quantifier: some, but not all, are shown.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That explains the smaller number of visible rows.

    Show answer or example answer

Das erklärt die kleinere sichtbare Zeilenzahl.

“Das” refers to the filter on open cases. “Die kleinere sichtbare Zeilenzahl” stacks a comparative and a second adjective before the compound noun.
