The idea

Die Charge (from French, with a soft “sh” sound) is a batch or lot made under the same conditions; on packaging it may appear as Ch.-B., Charge or LOT. Die Artikelnummer is the same for every unit of a product. “Welche Nummer meinen Sie?” uses welch- to ask for a choice among known options. Anhand plus genitive means “on the basis of”: anhand dieser Angabe. When spelling codes aloud, many people use a spelling alphabet, such as “A wie Anton”.

Other ways to say it

“Brauchen Sie die Artikelnummer oder die Chargennummer?” – Neutral and explicit; names both numbers in full.

“Meinen Sie die Losnummer?” – Los and LOT are common synonyms for batch, especially on imported goods.

“Ich buchstabiere die Charge: M wie Martha, vier, sieben.” – Shows how to read a code aloud character by character on the phone.

Watch out

“Wir prüfen die Zuordnung anhand diese Angabe.” → “Wir prüfen die Zuordnung anhand dieser Angabe.”: Anhand takes the genitive, so the feminine demonstrative must be dieser. “Diese” is the nominative or accusative form and sounds wrong after this preposition.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Which number do you mean: item or batch?

    Show answer or example answer

Welche Nummer meinen Sie: Artikel oder Charge?

“Welche Nummer” asks for a choice; “meinen Sie” is the polite form. After the colon, two bare nouns, Artikel or Charge, give the options without repeating “Nummer”.

  2. Put the words in order: dem / Herstellungsdatum / hier / Sie / steht / unter

    Show answer or example answer

Sie steht hier unter dem Herstellungsdatum.

“Sie” refers back to die Chargennummer. “Steht” is used for printed information, and “unter dem Herstellungsdatum” is a dative location: directly below the production date.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we will check the matching using that information.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann prüfen wir die Zuordnung anhand dieser Angabe.

“Dann” links the check to the number just read out. “Anhand dieser Angabe” is genitive after anhand: the match is checked on the basis of exactly that information.
