The idea

Damage is described with sein plus a past participle for the resulting state: eingerissen (torn), eingedrückt (dented), durchnässt (soaked). The position follows with an plus dative: an der Unterseite, an der Ecke. The question “Ist der Inhalt schon geprüft worden?” is the perfect of the werden passive, which uses “worden”, not “geworden”. Keep observations and conclusions apart; words like vermutlich or offenbar mark anything that is only a guess.

Other ways to say it

“Die Ecke des Kartons ist eingedrückt.” – Another common damage pattern with the same sein + participle structure.

“Die Verpackung ist beschädigt, den Inhalt habe ich noch nicht geprüft.” – Neutral; states the damage and the open check in one sentence.

“Ich möchte einen Transportschaden an der Verpackung melden.” – Formal opening for a phone call or email to the carrier or supplier.

Examples

  • Der äußere Karton ist an der Unterseite eingerissen. The outer carton is torn on the underside.
  • Ist der Inhalt schon geprüft worden?Have the contents already been checked?
  • Nein, bisher beschreibe ich nur die Verpackung. No, so far I am only describing the packaging.
  • Dann halten Sie diese Unterscheidung ausdrücklich fest. Then record that distinction explicitly.
  • Die betroffene Sendungsnummer steht daneben. The affected shipment number is noted beside it.
  • So bleibt die Beobachtung eindeutig zugeordnet. That keeps the observation clearly linked.

Watch out

“Ist der Inhalt schon geprüft geworden?” → “Ist der Inhalt schon geprüft worden?”: In the perfect passive, the participle of werden loses its ge-: geprüft worden. “Geworden” appears only when werden means “to become”, as in “Er ist Lagerleiter geworden.”

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The outer carton is torn on the underside.

    Show answer or example answer

Der äußere Karton ist an der Unterseite eingerissen.

“Ist … eingerissen” describes a result state, much like an adjective. “An der Unterseite” uses an with the dative for a fixed position on the carton.

  2. Put the words in order: beschreibe / bisher / die / ich / Nein / nur / Verpackung

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, bisher beschreibe ich nur die Verpackung.

After “Nein,” the sentence starts with “bisher”, so the verb “beschreibe” comes second and “ich” moves behind it. “Nur” limits the statement to the packaging.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That keeps the observation clearly linked.

So bleibt die Beobachtung eindeutig zugeordnet.

“So” means “this way” and points back to the separate description. “Zugeordnet bleiben” combines bleiben with a participle: the note stays linked to the right shipment.

Use it today

A parcel arrives with a wet corner. Write a short note for the goods-receipt log that describes the damage, its position and the shipment number, and says the contents have not been checked.
