The idea

Document vocabulary: die Fassung or die Version, freigeben (to approve, release), gültig (valid), das Versionsdatum. “Die freigegebene Fassung der Versandliste” combines a participle adjective with a genitive. Before a feminine noun, neuer becomes neuere: eine neuere Datei, a comparative that does not mean “the newest”. After klären, an indirect question sends the verb to the end: “welche tatsächlich gültig ist”. Tatsächlich stresses the real rather than the apparent status.

Other ways to say it

“Welche Version der Versandliste ist aktuell gültig?” – Neutral open question when several files are in circulation.

“Ist diese Liste schon freigegeben?” – Short yes/no check; fine in conversation.

“Bitte senden Sie mir die freigegebene Fassung mit Versionsdatum.” – Formal request in an email to the office or planning team.

Examples

  • Ist das die freigegebene Fassung der Versandliste? Is this the approved version of the dispatch list?
  • Auf dem Ausdruck fehlt das Versionsdatum. The version date is missing from the printout.
  • Im Ordner liegt eine neuere Datei. There is a newer file in the folder.
  • Dann vergleichen wir den Freigabestatus beider Fassungen. Then let us compare both versions’ approval status.
  • Ich verwende noch keine der Listen.I will not use either list yet.
  • Wir klären zuerst, welche tatsächlich gültig ist.We will first clarify which is actually valid.

Watch out

“Wir klären zuerst, welche ist tatsächlich gültig.” → “Wir klären zuerst, welche tatsächlich gültig ist.”: In an indirect question the conjugated verb goes to the end. English keeps normal order (“which one is valid”), so learners often leave “ist” in second place.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is this the approved version of the dispatch list?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist das die freigegebene Fassung der Versandliste?

A yes/no question with “Ist” first. “Die freigegebene Fassung” uses the participle of freigeben as an adjective; “der Versandliste” is genitive and names the document.

  2. Put the words in order: Datei / eine / Im / liegt / neuere / Ordner

    Show answer or example answer

Im Ordner liegt eine neuere Datei.

“Im Ordner” comes first, “liegt” second. “Eine neuere Datei” is a comparative adjective with -e after eine: newer, but not necessarily valid.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We will first clarify which is actually valid.

    Show answer or example answer

Wir klären zuerst, welche tatsächlich gültig ist.

The main clause “Wir klären zuerst” is followed by an indirect question. In “welche tatsächlich gültig ist”, the verb goes last; welche refers to the two lists.

Use it today

You find a printed dispatch list without a date and a newer file on the shared drive. Ask the planning office which version is approved, and say you will wait before loading.
