The idea

Error reports work by comparison: this label fails, the others work. Erkennen (to recognise, read) takes an accusative object: erkennt dieses Etikett. Nicht goes to the end when the whole sentence is negated. The passive “wurden erkannt” reports what happened without naming the device again, and “eben” here means “just now”. Screen messages are quoted word for word, and many teams also ask for a photo of the display.

Other ways to say it

“Dieses Etikett lässt sich nicht scannen.” – Neutral; “sich lassen” plus infinitive avoids naming the device.

“Beim Scannen kommt die Meldung „unbekannte Kennung“.” – Spoken style; quotes the screen message directly.

“Nur bei diesem Paket schlägt der Scan fehl.” – Slightly formal; fehlschlagen means to fail.

Examples

  • Der Scanner erkennt dieses Etikett nicht. The scanner does not recognize this label.
  • Passiert das auch bei anderen Paketen?Does that also happen with other packages?
  • Die anderen Etiketten wurden eben erkannt. The other labels were recognized just now.
  • Welche Meldung erscheint bei diesem? What message appears for this one?
  • Es erscheint unbekannte Kennung. It shows unknown identifier.
  • Dann melden Sie Etikett und Meldung gemeinsam. Then report the label and message together.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

“Der Scanner erkennt nicht dieses Etikett.” → “Der Scanner erkennt dieses Etikett nicht.”: To negate the whole statement, nicht goes after the object at the end. Placed before “dieses Etikett”, it sounds like a contrast, as if a different label had been recognised instead.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The scanner does not recognize this label.

    Show answer or example answer

Der Scanner erkennt dieses Etikett nicht.

Subject, verb, accusative object, then nicht at the end: the whole action fails. “Dieses Etikett” points to the specific label in your hand.

  2. Put the words in order: anderen / Die / eben / erkannt / Etiketten / wurden

    Show answer or example answer

Die anderen Etiketten wurden eben erkannt.

Simple past passive, “wurden … erkannt”, plural because of “die anderen Etiketten”. “Eben” (just now) shows the comparison is recent and on the same device.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then report the label and message together.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann melden Sie Etikett und Meldung gemeinsam.

A Sie imperative: “melden Sie”. The two objects, Etikett and Meldung, stand as a pair without articles, and “gemeinsam” means they belong in one report.

Use it today

Your scanner shows an error on one parcel only. Tell a colleague what happens, that other labels work, and read out the error text so they can log it.
