The idea

Labels are described with sein plus an adjective or participle: verschmiert (smudged), verblasst (faded), abgerissen (torn off), erkennbar or lesbar (legible). “Der untere Teil des …” uses the genitive, where masculine and neuter nouns take -s or -es: des Etiketts. Adjectives ending in -bar express possibility: erkennbar means “can be made out”. “Die Adresse möchte ich nicht erraten” is a careful, polite way to say you will not enter a guess.

Other ways to say it

“Die Adresse auf dem Etikett ist nicht mehr lesbar.” – Neutral; names the missing field directly.

“Nur die Sendungsnummer kann ich sicher entziffern.” – Slightly elevated; entziffern means to read something with effort.

“Das Etikett ist teilweise unleserlich.” – Short and neutral; works as a status note in the scanner or system.

Examples

  • Der untere Teil des Versandetiketts ist verschmiert. The lower part of the shipping label is smudged.
  • Welche Angaben können Sie noch lesen?Which details can you still read?
  • Die Sendungsnummer ist vollständig erkennbar. The shipment number is fully legible.
  • Dann gleichen wir sie mit dem Auftrag ab.Then let us compare it with the order.
  • Die Adresse möchte ich nicht erraten.I do not want to guess the address.
  • Gut, wir verwenden nur bestätigte Angaben.Good; we will use only confirmed information.

Watch out

“Der untere Teil des Versandetikett ist verschmiert.” → “Der untere Teil des Versandetiketts ist verschmiert.”: Learners often drop the genitive ending. Neuter nouns such as das Etikett take -s after des, so it must be des Versandetiketts.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The lower part of the shipping label is smudged.

    Show answer or example answer

Der untere Teil des Versandetiketts ist verschmiert.

The subject “der untere Teil” is narrowed down by the genitive “des Versandetiketts”. “Ist verschmiert” describes the current state with sein and a participle.

  2. Put the words in order: Die / erkennbar / ist / Sendungsnummer / vollständig

    Show answer or example answer

    Die Sendungsnummer ist vollständig erkennbar.

“Vollständig” modifies “erkennbar”: the whole number, not just parts of it, can be read. The -bar ending turns erkennen into “recognisable”.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; we will use only confirmed information.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, wir verwenden nur bestätigte Angaben.

“Gut,” stands outside the sentence as a reaction, so “wir verwenden” keeps normal order. “Bestätigte Angaben” is accusative plural without article, so the adjective ends in -e.
