The idea

In a warehouse, der Artikel means a product with its own number; the plural is die Artikel, with no added ending. After a number without an article, verschieden takes -e: zwei verschiedene Artikel. “Angegeben ist …” is a state passive (sein + participle) with the participle fronted for emphasis. “Laut Liste” (according to the list) introduces the target state. Use getrennt or einzeln to say each variant is counted on its own.

Other ways to say it

“Der Karton enthält zwei unterschiedliche Varianten.” – Neutral and slightly formal; enthalten replaces the location phrase.

“Hier sind zwei Artikel gemischt.” – Short and spoken; fine for a quick remark to a colleague.

“Im Karton befinden sich Artikel mit zwei verschiedenen Nummern.” – Formal report style; “sich befinden” is common in written notes.

Examples

  • In diesem Karton liegen zwei verschiedene Artikel. This carton contains two different items.
  • Sollten laut Liste alle Stücke gleich sein?Should all units be the same according to the list?
  • Ja, angegeben ist nur eine Artikelnummer.Yes, only one item number is listed.
  • Dann zählen Sie beide Varianten getrennt. Then count both versions separately.
  • Ich notiere die jeweilige Kennzeichnung daneben.I will note each label beside it.
  • So können wir die Abweichung konkret melden. That lets us report the discrepancy precisely.

Watch out

“In diesem Karton liegen zwei verschiedenen Artikel.” → “In diesem Karton liegen zwei verschiedene Artikel.”: With no definite article in front, the adjective takes the strong ending: zwei verschiedene Artikel. The -en ending belongs after die, as in die zwei verschiedenen Artikel.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: This carton contains two different items.

    Show answer or example answer

In diesem Karton liegen zwei verschiedene Artikel.

The location “In diesem Karton” opens, the verb “liegen” is second, and the plural subject follows. “Diesem” is masculine dative after in, since nothing moves.

  2. Put the words in order: angegeben / Artikelnummer / eine / ist / Ja / nur

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, angegeben ist nur eine Artikelnummer.

“Angegeben ist” fronts the participle for emphasis; the subject “nur eine Artikelnummer” comes last. “Nur” stresses that the list shows a single number.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That lets us report the discrepancy precisely.

So können wir die Abweichung konkret melden.

“So” refers back to the separate counts and labels. The modal “können” is second, the infinitive “melden” closes the sentence, and “konkret” means with exact figures.
