The idea
A clear handover sentence joins a state and a gap with aber: “ist vorbereitet, aber … fehlt noch”. Fehlen has no accusative object; the missing thing is the subject (ein Paket fehlt), and the whole that lacks it goes in the dative. “Steht noch aus”, from ausstehen, is a slightly more formal way to say something is outstanding. In short spoken answers, “das mit der …” replaces a full noun phrase. Kennzeichnen and markieren both mean to flag a record.
Other ways to say it
“Die Sendung ist fast fertig, nur ein Paket ist noch nicht da.” – Casual and clear; fine between colleagues on the floor.
“Ein Packstück steht noch aus, die übrigen sind versandbereit.” – Formal; Packstück is the standard term in shipping documents.
“Bitte die Sendung erst nach Eingang des letzten Pakets abschließen.” – An infinitive instruction, typical for written handover notes.
Examples
- Die Sendung ist vorbereitet, aber ein Paket fehlt noch. The shipment is prepared, but one package is still missing.
- Welches Paket steht noch aus?Which package is outstanding?
- Das mit der Endnummer sieben. The one with the final digit seven.
- Ist der fehlende Teil in der Übersicht markiert? Is the missing part marked in the overview?
- Ja, die Sendung ist als unvollständig gekennzeichnet.Yes, the shipment is marked incomplete.
- Dann prüft die nächste Schicht zuerst diesen Eintrag. Then the next shift will check this entry first.

Watch out
“Die Sendung fehlt noch ein Paket.” → “Der Sendung fehlt noch ein Paket.”: English “the shipment is missing a parcel” makes the shipment the subject. In German the missing thing is the subject, and the whole that lacks it stands in the dative: der Sendung.
Try it yourself
Translate into German: The shipment is prepared, but one package is still missing.
Show answer or example answer
Die Sendung ist vorbereitet, aber ein Paket fehlt noch.
Two main clauses joined by aber, which does not change the word order. “Ist vorbereitet” is a state passive; “fehlt noch” names the open gap.
Put the words in order: Das / der / Endnummer / mit / sieben
Show answer or example answer
Das mit der Endnummer sieben.
An elliptical answer: “Das [Paket] mit der Endnummer sieben.” The noun is dropped because it is obvious; mit plus dative identifies the parcel by its last digit.
Write this sentence in German: Then the next shift will check this entry first.
Show answer or example answer
Dann prüft die nächste Schicht zuerst diesen Eintrag.
“Dann” comes first, so “prüft” is second and the subject “die nächste Schicht” follows. “Zuerst” sets the priority; “diesen Eintrag” is masculine accusative.

Your shift ends and an outgoing order of five parcels still lacks one. Write a handover note saying what is ready, which parcel is missing and what the next shift should check first.
