The idea

Shortfall reports rely on two location phrases plus the verbs stehen and liegen. Written information “steht” on a document (auf dem Auftrag, auf der Liste); goods “liegen” in a bin (im Fach). Both locations take the dative because nothing is moving. As a counting unit, Stück usually stays singular after a number (zwölf Stück); with an adjective, the plural is also common (drei fehlende Stücke). Sie is the safe default between colleagues who barely know each other, though many warehouse teams switch to du quickly.

Other ways to say it

“Laut Auftrag sind es zwölf Stück, gefunden habe ich nur neun.” – Neutral; “laut” plus a noun names the source of the target quantity.

“Im Fach fehlen drei Stück.” – Short and direct; suits a quick radio call or chat message.

“Zwischen Auftrag und Bestand gibt es eine Differenz von drei Stück.” – More formal; typical wording for a written report or a system note.

Examples

  • Auf dem Auftrag stehen zwölf Stück, im Fach liegen neun. The order says twelve units; there are nine in the compartment.
  • Haben Sie das benachbarte Fach ebenfalls geprüft?Have you also checked the neighboring compartment?
  • Dort liegt ein anderer Artikel.A different item is stored there.
  • Dann notieren wir zunächst drei fehlende Stücke. Then let us first record three missing units.
  • Soll ich den Auftrag als unvollständig markieren?Should I mark the order as incomplete?
  • Bitte klären Sie den vorgesehenen Status mit der Leitung. Please clarify the appropriate status with the supervisor.

Watch out

“Im Fach liegt neun.” → “Im Fach liegen neun.”: When “im Fach” starts the sentence, the subject “neun” comes after the verb, and learners forget to make the verb agree. Nine pieces are plural, so the verb is liegen, not liegt.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The order says twelve units; there are nine in the compartment.

    Show answer or example answer

Auf dem Auftrag stehen zwölf Stück, im Fach liegen neun.

Two main clauses joined by a comma mirror each other: place, verb, quantity. “Stehen” fits the order document, “liegen” fits goods lying in the bin.

  2. Put the words in order: anderer / Artikel / Dort / ein / liegt

    Show answer or example answer

    Dort liegt ein anderer Artikel.

“Dort” refers back to the neighbouring bin and takes first position, so the verb “liegt” follows directly. After ein, a masculine nominative adjective ends in -er: ein anderer Artikel.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please clarify the appropriate status with the supervisor.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte klären Sie den vorgesehenen Status mit der Leitung.

A polite Sie imperative: verb first, then Sie. “Den vorgesehenen Status” is masculine accusative, so article and adjective both end in -en; “mit der Leitung” is dative after mit.

You are picking an order and find fewer items than listed. Say one sentence comparing order and bin, then one sentence asking your team lead what status the order should get.
