The idea

“Sich lassen” plus infinitive often replaces a passive with können: “lässt sich nicht zuordnen” means “kann nicht zugeordnet werden”. Zuordnen (to assign, match) stands as an infinitive at the end. Eindeutig (unambiguous) is the key word in matching. A return usually needs a reference such as a Rücksendenummer or Bestellnummer, while the Lieferschein (delivery note) lists the goods. “Gezielt nachfragen” means asking with a specific reference rather than in general.

Other ways to say it

“Zu dieser Rücksendung finde ich keinen passenden Vorgang.” – Neutral; reports your search result in the first person.

“Die Retoure hat keine Rücksendenummer.” – Short; Retoure is the common logistics word for a return.

“Können Sie mir zu dieser Bestellnummer den Vorgang nennen?” – Polite enquiry to customer service using the order number.

Examples

  • Diese Rücksendung lässt sich nicht eindeutig zuordnen. This return shipment cannot be matched unambiguously.
  • Liegt eine Rücksendenummer bei?Is there a return number included?
  • Im Karton liegt nur ein Lieferschein. There is only a delivery note in the box.
  • Dann vergleichen wir die dortigen Angaben. Then let us compare the details on it.
  • Die ursprüngliche Bestellnummer ist lesbar. The original order number is legible.
  • Mit dieser Nummer können wir gezielt nachfragen. We can make a specific enquiry using that number.

Watch out

“Diese Rücksendung lässt nicht eindeutig zuordnen.” → “Diese Rücksendung lässt sich nicht eindeutig zuordnen.”: Without sich, lassen means “to let” or “to have something done” and needs a person who acts. The reflexive sich is what turns the sentence into “cannot be matched”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: This return shipment cannot be matched unambiguously.

    Show answer or example answer

Diese Rücksendung lässt sich nicht eindeutig zuordnen.

“Lässt sich … zuordnen” works like a passive with können. Nicht and eindeutig together say the match is uncertain, which is more precise than “impossible”.

  2. Put the words in order: ein / Im / Karton / Lieferschein / liegt / nur

    Show answer or example answer

Im Karton liegt nur ein Lieferschein.

The dative location “Im Karton” opens, so “liegt” follows in second place. “Nur” stresses that the delivery note is the only document found.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We can make a specific enquiry using that number.

    Show answer or example answer

Mit dieser Nummer können wir gezielt nachfragen.

“Mit dieser Nummer” is dative after mit and comes first for emphasis. “Gezielt” (targeted) describes “nachfragen”, which closes the sentence as an infinitive after “können”.

Use it today

A returned parcel has no return number, only an old delivery note. Write a short message to customer service that explains the problem and gives the order number from the note.
