Make a message readable with commas, questions, quotations and clear sentence boundaries. Notice this example: „Ich kaufe Brot, Käse und Äpfel.“

The idea

Separate subordinate clauses with commas and use question marks for direct questions; ordinary lists need commas between items.

Read the text

Watch out

A simple und-list usually has no comma before its final und. Do not add commas wherever you pause while speaking.

Try it yourself

    Show answer or example answer

„Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich müde bin.“ — A comma separates the main clause from the weil subordinate clause.

  2. Setze das Satzzeichen: Kommst du morgen

    Show answer or example answer

    Kommst du morgen?

„Kommst du morgen?“ — A direct question ends with a question mark.

  3. Setze die Liste richtig: Brot Käse und Äpfel.

    Show answer or example answer

    Brot, Käse und Äpfel.

„Brot, Käse und Äpfel.“ — Separate list items with a comma, but not before the final und here.
