Connect short ideas by meaning while checking the different word-order patterns that result. Notice this example: „Ich lerne neue Wörter und wiederhole alte Beispiele.“

The idea

Und and aber can connect main clauses or smaller units. Weil introduces a verb-final clause. When deshalb opens a main clause, it takes the first position, followed by the finite verb.

Read the text

Watch out

Do not copy the same word order after every connector. Check whether you have a main or subordinate clause.

Try it yourself

  1. Ordne nach „weil“: weil / ich / müde / bin.

    Show answer or example answer

    weil ich müde bin.

„weil ich müde bin.“ — Weil introduces a subordinate clause with the finite verb at the end.

  2. Ordne: Deshalb / ich / mache / eine Pause.

    Show answer or example answer

    Deshalb mache ich eine Pause.

„Deshalb mache ich eine Pause.“ — The opening phrase takes position one; the finite verb must come next.

  3. Gegensatz ohne Nebensatz: Der Text ist kurz, ___ schwierig. (aber / weil)

    Show answer or example answer

    aber

„aber“ — Aber contrasts the two adjectives kurz and schwierig: a short text can still be difficult. This exercise contrasts two descriptions within one clause, not two complete clauses.
