The idea

“Es geht um” plus accusative names a topic; the question word is worum (um + was). “Bei Ihrer Frage” uses bei plus dative. Die Abholstelle is the collection point. “Jemandem etwas zeigen” takes dative plus accusative: Ihnen den richtigen Eingang. Dieselbe is one word: dieselbe Öffnungszeit. Closing times in Germany vary by shop and region, so referring to written information avoids mistakes.

Other ways to say it

“Wir machen gleich zu, kann ich Ihnen noch schnell helfen?” – Friendly and neutral; zumachen is spoken for schließen.

“In fünf Minuten ist Ladenschluss.” – Neutral information; often announced over the speakers.

“Kommen Sie gern morgen wieder, dann haben wir mehr Zeit.” – Polite; suits questions that need more time.

Examples

  • Wir schließen gleich; worum geht es bei Ihrer Frage? We are closing shortly; what is your question about?
  • Ich brauche nur die Abholstelle für morgen.I only need the collection point for tomorrow.
  • Dafür zeige ich Ihnen kurz den richtigen Eingang.I will quickly show you the correct entrance for that.
  • Gilt dort dieselbe Öffnungszeit?Does it have the same opening time?
  • Bitte prüfen Sie die Abholzeiten auf Ihrer Nachricht. Please check the collection times in your message.
  • Danke, dann weiß ich, welche Angabe ich brauche. Thanks; now I know which information I need.

Watch out

“Wir schließen gleich; um was geht es bei Ihre Frage?” → “Wir schließen gleich; worum geht es bei Ihrer Frage?”: Bei takes the dative, so Ihre becomes Ihrer. Also, standard German prefers worum over the colloquial “um was”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: We are closing shortly; what is your question about?

    Show answer or example answer

Wir schließen gleich; worum geht es bei Ihrer Frage?

A statement and a question joined by a semicolon. Worum asks for the topic, es geht is impersonal, and bei Ihrer Frage is dative.

  2. Put the words in order: Dafür / den / Eingang / ich / Ihnen / kurz / richtigen / zeige

    Show answer or example answer

Dafür zeige ich Ihnen kurz den richtigen Eingang.

Dafür (for that purpose) opens the sentence; zeige is second, Ihnen dative, and den richtigen Eingang accusative.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thanks; now I know which information I need.

    Show answer or example answer

Danke, dann weiß ich, welche Angabe ich brauche.

Danke, then dann weiß ich and an indirect question with welche; the verb brauche goes to the end.
