The idea

“Zu etwas passen” takes zu plus dative; plural nouns add -n: zu den Artikeln. Scheinen plus zu plus infinitive expresses a cautious impression: “scheinen vertauscht zu sein”. Vertauschen means to swap by mistake. “Den aktuellen Stand sichern” means to record the current situation, for example with a photo. “Jemanden dazuholen” means to bring someone in.

Other ways to say it

“Hier stimmen die Preise am Regal nicht.” – Neutral and short; good first remark.

“Ich glaube, die Schilder sind verrutscht.” – Informal; verrutschen means to slip out of place.

“Laut Artikelnummer gehört dieses Schild ein Fach tiefer.” – Neutral and exact; points to the correct place.

Watch out

“Die Nummern scheinen vertauscht sein.” → “Die Nummern scheinen vertauscht zu sein.”: Scheinen needs zu before the infinitive, unlike modal verbs. Learners treat it like müssen or können and drop zu.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: These two price labels do not match the items.

    Show answer or example answer

Diese beiden Preisschilder passen nicht zu den Artikeln.

Diese beiden Preisschilder is the plural subject, so passen is plural; zu den Artikeln is dative plural with the extra -n.

  2. Put the words in order: die / Ja / Nummern / scheinen / sein / vertauscht / zu

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, die Nummern scheinen vertauscht zu sein.

Scheinen plus zu sein softens the claim; vertauscht is the participle of vertauschen, and zu sein closes the sentence.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Together we will check the correct matching.

    Show answer or example answer

Gemeinsam prüfen wir die richtige Zuordnung.

Gemeinsam opens the sentence for emphasis, so prüfen precedes wir; die richtige Zuordnung is the object.
