The idea

“Dabei sein, etwas zu tun” expresses an action in progress, similar to English -ing. “Kurz davor sein/stehen, etwas zu tun” means to be about to. With separable verbs, zu goes between prefix and stem: zusammenzupacken. Loszugehen is formed the same way, though the page writes “kurz davor loszugehen” without a comma, which is allowed. Der Aufbruch is the act of setting off.

Other ways to say it

“Ich bin gleich weg.” – Casual and very short; said on the way out.

“Ich wollte gerade los.” – Casual; the past of wollen softly says you were just leaving.

“Ich bin im Begriff zu gehen.” – Formal and slightly literary; rarer in speech.

Examples

  • Ich bin gerade dabei, meine Sachen für den Aufbruch zusammenzupacken.I am just packing my things to leave.
  • Kannst du vorher noch diese Notiz lesen? Can you read this note before you go?
  • Ich stehe kurz davor loszugehen, habe aber noch zwei Minuten.I am about to leave, but I still have two minutes.
  • Dann nenne ich dir nur den wichtigsten Punkt. Then I will tell you only the most important point.

Watch out

“Ich bin gerade dabei, meine Sachen zu zusammenpacken.” → “Ich bin gerade dabei, meine Sachen zusammenzupacken.”: With separable verbs, zu goes between the prefix and the stem and is written as one word: zusammenzupacken, not “zu zusammenpacken”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I am just packing my things to leave.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich bin gerade dabei, meine Sachen für den Aufbruch zusammenzupacken.

“Gerade dabei” plus a zu-infinitive after the comma. Zu sits inside zusammenzupacken; “für den Aufbruch” gives the purpose.

  2. Put the words in order: aber / davor / habe / Ich / kurz / loszugehen / Minuten / noch / stehe / zwei

    Show answer or example answer

Ich stehe kurz davor loszugehen, habe aber noch zwei Minuten.

“Kurz davor stehen” plus loszugehen, with zu in the middle. “Habe aber noch zwei Minuten” limits the time available.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; let us keep the handover brief now.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, dann halten wir die Übergabe jetzt kurz.

“Kurz halten” means to keep something brief. Dann and jetzt link the decision to the time limit just mentioned.
