The idea
“Mit etwas fast so weit sein” takes mit + dative for the task. Alternatives are “fast fertig sein” and “gleich fertig sein”. Noch marks what is still left: “Nur die Stühle müssen noch …”. “Noch nicht ganz fertig” is a softer way to say not finished yet. Fehlen takes the dative for the person missing something: Welcher Schritt fehlt uns noch? “Dazugehören” means to be part of something.
Other ways to say it
“Wir sind gleich fertig.” – Neutral and very common; gleich means in a moment.
“Fast geschafft!” – Casual and encouraging; often said to a team.
“Wir befinden uns in den letzten Zügen.” – Neutral idiom for the final stage; also used in written updates.
Examples
- Mit dem Aufbau sind wir fast so weit.We are nearly ready with setup.
- Welcher Schritt fehlt uns noch?Which step is still missing?
- Nur die Stühle müssen noch richtig stehen.Only the chairs still need to be positioned correctly.
- Dann sind wir also noch nicht ganz fertig. So we are not quite finished yet.
- Genau, dieser letzte Schritt gehört noch dazu.Exactly; that final step is still part of it.
- Gut, danach bestätigen wir den fertigen Zustand.Good; afterwards we will confirm it is complete.

Watch out
“Mit dem Aufbau sind wir fast so fern.” → “Mit dem Aufbau sind wir fast so weit.”: The idiom is fixed as “so weit sein”. Learners sometimes swap weit for fern because both mean far, but only weit works here.

Show answer or example answer
Mit dem Aufbau sind wir fast so weit.
“Mit dem Aufbau” is dative after mit and comes first, so sind follows. “Fast so weit” is the fixed phrase for nearly ready.
Put the words in order: die / müssen / noch / Nur / richtig / stehen / Stühle
Show answer or example answer
Nur die Stühle müssen noch richtig stehen.
Nur limits the open task to the chairs; noch says it is still pending. Müssen with stehen describes the required state.
Write this sentence in German: Good; afterwards we will confirm it is complete.
Show answer or example answer
Gut, danach bestätigen wir den fertigen Zustand.
Danach first, so bestätigen comes second. “Den fertigen Zustand” is masculine accusative: the finished state.
