The idea

“Gegen + time” and “ungefähr um + time” both mean around; “voraussichtlich” adds that it is an estimate. German “halb” counts towards the next hour: halb vier = 3:30, halb acht = 7:30. “Ankommen” is separable, so “an” closes the main clause. “Rechnen mit + dative” means to expect something.

Other ways to say it

“Ich bin so gegen halb vier da.” – Casual; “so” adds extra vagueness.

“Ich müsste ungefähr um 15:30 Uhr ankommen.” – Neutral; Konjunktiv II müsste marks the estimate.

“Meine voraussichtliche Ankunft ist gegen 15:30 Uhr.” – Formal and written; suits emails to hotels or offices.

Examples

  • Ich komme voraussichtlich gegen halb vier an.I will probably arrive around half past three.
  • Ist das eine genaue Uhrzeit? Is that an exact time?
  • Nein, ein paar Minuten Abweichung sind möglich. No, a difference of a few minutes is possible.
  • Dann warte ich in der Nähe des Eingangs. Then I will wait near the entrance.
  • Bei größerer Verspätung schreibe ich sofort. If there is a longer delay, I will write immediately.
  • Gut, ich rechne mit einer ungefähren Ankunft.Good; I will expect an approximate arrival.

Watch out

“Ich komme gegen halb drei an. (gemeint: 15:30 Uhr)” → “Ich komme gegen halb vier an.”: English “half three” means 3:30 in British usage, so learners say “halb drei”. In German, halb looks ahead: halb drei is 2:30, and 3:30 is halb vier.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I will probably arrive around half past three.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich komme voraussichtlich gegen halb vier an.

“Komme” is second and “an” goes to the end. “Voraussichtlich” marks the estimate, and “gegen halb vier” means around 3:30.

  2. Put the words in order: Abweichung / ein / Minuten / möglich / Nein / paar / sind

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, ein paar Minuten Abweichung sind möglich.

“Nein” answers the question about an exact time. “Ein paar Minuten Abweichung” is the subject, so the plural verb “sind” follows; “möglich” closes the clause.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; I will expect an approximate arrival.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, ich rechne mit einer ungefähren Ankunft.

“Rechnen mit” takes the dative: “mit einer ungefähren Ankunft”, feminine dative with the ending -en on the adjective.
