The idea

“Soweit ich weiß” is a subordinate clause (verb weiß at its end) that fills position one, so the main clause continues with its verb. “Nach meinem bisherigen Stand” and “meines Wissens” are written and formal; “ich glaube” is casual but sounds less certain. “Bisher” (so far) shows your information may be outdated. Keep the distinction clear by asking “Ist das schon bestätigt?”

Other ways to say it

“Meines Wissens findet die Probe unten statt.” – Formal and compact; uses the genitive, common in writing.

“Ich glaube, die Probe ist im Erdgeschoss.” – Casual; sounds less sure than “soweit ich weiß”.

“Wenn ich mich nicht irre, ist die Probe unten.” – Neutral and polite; invites correction.

Examples

  • Soweit ich weiß, findet die Probe im Erdgeschoss statt. As far as I know, the rehearsal is on the ground floor.
  • Ist das schon verbindlich bestätigt?Has that been firmly confirmed yet?
  • Ich kenne bisher nur den alten Raumplan. So far, I only know the old room plan.
  • Dann sollten wir den neuen Plan prüfen. Then we should check the new plan.
  • Nach meinem bisherigen Stand bleibt die Uhrzeit gleich.According to my current information, the time remains unchanged.
  • Danke, ich unterscheide das von einer Bestätigung. Thanks; I will distinguish that from confirmation.

Watch out

“Soweit ich weiß, die Probe findet im Erdgeschoss statt.” → “Soweit ich weiß, findet die Probe im Erdgeschoss statt.”: English keeps subject-verb order after “as far as I know”. In German the soweit-clause occupies the first position, so the finite verb must come next, before the subject.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: As far as I know, the rehearsal is on the ground floor.

    Show answer or example answer

Soweit ich weiß, findet die Probe im Erdgeschoss statt.

“Stattfinden” is separable: “findet” follows the soweit-clause and “statt” closes the sentence. “Im Erdgeschoss” is dative for location.

  2. Put the words in order: alten / bisher / den / Ich / kenne / nur / Raumplan

    Show answer or example answer

Ich kenne bisher nur den alten Raumplan.

“Bisher” means up to now and admits the information may be old; “nur” limits it to the old room plan.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thanks; I will distinguish that from confirmation.

    Show answer or example answer

Danke, ich unterscheide das von einer Bestätigung.

“Etwas von etwas unterscheiden” means to tell one thing from another; von takes the dative, hence “von einer Bestätigung”.
