The idea

Wünschen takes a dative person and an accusative wish: jemandem viel Erfolg wünschen. Für + accusative names the occasion (für deine Prüfung). “Alles Gute für …” is a broader, all-purpose wish. “Morgig” is the adjective form of morgen, so “der morgige Prüfungstag” replaces “der Prüfungstag morgen”. Hoffen is usually followed by a dass-clause, with the verb at the end.

Other ways to say it

“Toi, toi, toi für morgen!” – Casual; a traditional good-luck formula, common before exams and performances.

“Viel Glück bei der Prüfung!” – Neutral and short; bei + dative for the event.

“Ich wünsche Ihnen für die Prüfung alles Gute.” – Formal; for a colleague or course participant you address with Sie.

Watch out

“Ich wünsche dich viel Erfolg.” → “Ich wünsche dir viel Erfolg.”: The person receiving a wish is the indirect object, so wünschen needs the dative dir. Dich would make the person the thing being wished.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I wish you much success in your exam tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

Für deine Prüfung morgen wünsche ich dir viel Erfolg.

The occasion “für deine Prüfung morgen” comes first, so the verb wünsche stays second and ich follows. Dir is dative, viel Erfolg accusative.

  2. Put the words in order: Aufgaben / dass / die / du / gut / hoffe / Ich / verstehst

    Show answer or example answer

Ich hoffe, dass du die Aufgaben gut verstehst.

Hoffen introduces a dass-clause, so the finite verb verstehst moves to the end. The wish is about understanding, not about the grade, which sounds kind.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will get in touch afterwards if I want to talk about it.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich melde mich danach, wenn ich erzählen möchte.

Sich melden means to get in touch. The wenn-clause with the verb at the end leaves it open whether the person wants to talk afterwards.

Use it today

Your flatmate has a driving test tomorrow morning. Write a short message wishing him success with wünschen + dative and adding one sentence of hope that is not about the result.
