The idea
“Für heute” limits the suggestion to today and usually starts the sentence. “Es dabei belassen” is slightly formal; “Schluss machen” and “aufhören” are everyday verbs. Können makes the suggestion sound open rather than like a command. “Den Stand notieren” means to write down where you are. In “wo wir weitermachen” the verb goes to the end because wo starts an indirect question.
Other ways to say it
“Lass uns für heute Schluss machen.” – Casual suggestion to one person on du terms.
“Ich würde sagen, für heute reicht es.” – Neutral; ich würde sagen softens the proposal.
“Sollen wir hier für heute einen Punkt machen?” – Neutral question; einen Punkt machen is a common idiom for stopping.
Examples
- Für heute können wir es dabei belassen. We can leave it there for today.
- Was bleibt dann für morgen übrig? What remains for tomorrow, then?
- Morgen prüfen wir nur noch die letzten beiden Abschnitte.Tomorrow we will check just the final two sections.
- Dann notiere ich unseren aktuellen Stand. Then I will note our current status.
- Ja, danach machen wir für heute Schluss.Yes, afterwards we will call it a day.
- Gut, so wissen wir morgen, wo wir weitermachen.Good; that way we will know where to continue tomorrow.

Watch out
“Für heute wir können es dabei belassen.” → “Für heute können wir es dabei belassen.”: A time phrase in first position counts as one element, so the finite verb können comes next and the subject wir follows it.

Translate into German: We can leave it there for today.
Show answer or example answer
Für heute können wir es dabei belassen.
“Für heute” first, then können, then wir. “Es dabei belassen” is a fixed phrase; belassen stays at the end as an infinitive.
Put the words in order: Abschnitte / beiden / die / letzten / Morgen / noch / nur / prüfen / wir
Show answer or example answer
Morgen prüfen wir nur noch die letzten beiden Abschnitte.
Morgen first, so prüfen comes second. “Nur noch” means only … remaining: just the last two sections are left.
Write this sentence in German: Good; that way we will know where to continue tomorrow.
Show answer or example answer
Gut, so wissen wir morgen, wo wir weitermachen.
So means “that way”. The indirect question “wo wir weitermachen” sends the verb to the end; weitermachen stays joined.
