The idea

“Es zu etwas schaffen” means to manage to get to something; the event follows zu + dative (zum Aufbau, zur Feier). Leaving out “es” sounds unfinished. “Dazukommen” (to join later) is separable: “Ich komme später dazu.” “Ausfallen” means to drop out entirely. In a partial cancellation, state the missing part first and the part you keep second.

Other ways to say it

“Beim Aufbau kann ich leider nicht dabei sein.” – Neutral and polite; suits clubs and workplace events.

“Zum Aufbau komme ich leider nicht.” – Neutral and plain; the most direct version.

“Am Aufbau kann ich leider nicht teilnehmen.” – Formal; fits written replies to an organiser.

Examples

  • Zum gemeinsamen Aufbau schaffe ich es leider nicht.Unfortunately, I cannot make it to the group setup.
  • Fällst du für den ganzen Abend aus? Will you be unavailable for the whole evening?
  • Nein, zur Veranstaltung selbst komme ich später dazu. No, I will join the event itself later.
  • Dann suchen wir nur für den Aufbau Ersatz. Then we will find a replacement only for setup.
  • Danke, ich wollte den Umfang meiner Absage klarstellen. Thanks; I wanted to clarify the extent of my cancellation.
  • Gut, für den Abend bleibst du eingeplant.Good; you remain included for the evening.

Watch out

“Ich kann es nicht machen zum Aufbau.” → “Zum Aufbau schaffe ich es leider nicht.”: “I can’t make it” does not use machen in German. The idiom is “es schaffen”, and the event comes with zu, normally before the verb or at the start of the sentence.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Unfortunately, I cannot make it to the group setup.

    Show answer or example answer

Zum gemeinsamen Aufbau schaffe ich es leider nicht.

“Zum gemeinsamen Aufbau” is zu + dem, dative, and comes first; then “schaffe ich es”. “Leider” sits after the object pronoun and softens the refusal.

  2. Put the words in order: dazu / ich / komme / Nein / selbst / später / Veranstaltung / zur

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, zur Veranstaltung selbst komme ich später dazu.

“Nein” answers the question about the whole evening. “Dazukommen” splits into “komme … dazu”; “zur Veranstaltung selbst” stresses the main event.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; you remain included for the evening.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, für den Abend bleibst du eingeplant.

“Bleiben” plus the participle “eingeplant” describes a continuing state: you are still counted in. “Für den Abend” is accusative after für.
