The idea
Auf + accusative names what you drink to: auf dich, auf den Abend, auf unseren Erfolg. Anstoßen is separable: wir stoßen an; “auf etwas anstoßen” means to toast something. Mit anstoßen means to join in. “Prost” is casual, “Zum Wohl” slightly more formal and common with wine. Darauf replaces “auf diesen Anlass”.
Other ways to say it
“Prost, auf uns!” – Casual and short; among friends.
“Lasst uns auf das Geburtstagskind anstoßen!” – Neutral; a common invitation to toast at a birthday party.
“Ich möchte das Glas auf unsere Gastgeber erheben.” – Formal and slightly ceremonial; suits a speech at a dinner.
Examples
- Auf unseren gelungenen gemeinsamen Abend! To our successful evening together!
- Darauf stoßen wir gern mit euch an.We are happy to raise a glass with you to that.
- Zum Wohl, und danke für eure Hilfe.Cheers, and thank you for your help.
- Auch mit Wasser stoße ich gern mit an.I am happy to join the toast with water too.
- Für mich gibt es heute ebenfalls etwas ohne Alkohol.I am also having something without alcohol today.
- Dann freuen wir uns einfach zusammen über den Anlass. Then let us simply enjoy the occasion together.

Watch out
“Auf unserem gelungenen Abend!” → “Auf unseren gelungenen Abend!”: In a toast auf points towards what you drink to, so it takes the accusative. The dative would mean physically “on the evening”.

Show answer or example answer
Auf unseren gelungenen gemeinsamen Abend!
A verbless toast. Auf takes the accusative; masculine Abend gives unseren, and both adjectives end in -en.
