The idea

“Bei etwas dabei sein” combines bei + dative with the adverb dabei; in short answers the event is dropped: “Ich bin dabei.” “Mit jemandem rechnen” (to count on someone) takes mit + dative; “fest” makes it definite. “Mitmachen” and “mitkommen” are separable alternatives. “Jemanden eintragen” means to put someone’s name on a list.

Other ways to say it

“Da bin ich dabei!” – Casual and enthusiastic; typical reply in a group chat.

“Ich mache gern mit.” – Neutral and friendly; fits activities with tasks.

“Sie können mit mir rechnen.” – Formal; suits a club board, an employer or a sign-up with Sie.

Examples

  • Bei der gemeinsamen Fahrradrunde bin ich dabei.I am in for the group bike ride.
  • Soll ich dich für Samstag eintragen?Shall I put you down for Saturday?
  • Ja, du kannst fest mit mir rechnen.Yes, you can definitely count on me.
  • Brauchst du noch die Treffpunktbeschreibung?Do you still need the meeting-point description?
  • Bitte schick mir nur noch den genauen Startort. Please just send me the exact starting place.

Watch out

“Zähl mich ein für die Fahrradrunde!” → “Bei der Fahrradrunde bin ich dabei!”: “Count me in” translated literally gives “zähl mich ein”, which is not used in German. Taking part is expressed with “dabei sein” or “mitmachen”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I am in for the group bike ride.

    Show answer or example answer

Bei der gemeinsamen Fahrradrunde bin ich dabei.

“Bei der gemeinsamen Fahrradrunde” is dative after bei and opens the sentence, so “bin” comes before “ich”; “dabei” closes it. Fahrradrunde means a group ride.

  2. Put the words in order: du / fest / Ja / kannst / mir / mit / rechnen

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, du kannst fest mit mir rechnen.

“Mit mir rechnen” means to count on me; “fest” makes the promise definite. The modal “kannst” is in second place and “rechnen” at the end.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then you will have the latest information.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann bist du auf dem aktuellen Stand.

“Auf dem aktuellen Stand sein” means to have the latest information; auf takes the dative here because it describes a state, not a movement.
