The idea

“Mit etwas anfangen” takes mit + dative: mit der Skizze. After the modal kannst the separable verb anfangen goes to the end in one piece. Können is the usual way to give permission in everyday speech; dürfen sounds more official. Loslegen is casual for starting energetically. Limiting the permission (“nur mit diesem ersten Schritt”) makes clear what still needs agreement.

Other ways to say it

“Leg ruhig schon los!” – Casual imperative; ruhig signals permission.

“Sie dürfen gern schon beginnen.” – Formal; beginnen is a little more elevated than anfangen.

“Fang ruhig ohne uns an.” – Casual; makes clear nobody needs to wait for the others.

Examples

  • Du kannst mit der Skizze gern schon anfangen. You are welcome to start the sketch already.
  • Soll ich auf die anderen warten?Should I wait for the others?
  • Nein, für diesen Entwurf kannst du loslegen. No, you can go ahead with this draft.
  • Dann zeichne ich zuerst die Grundform. Then I will draw the basic shape first.
  • Genau, die Details besprechen wir später gemeinsam.Exactly; we will discuss the details together later.

Watch out

“Du kannst mit der Skizze gern schon fangen an.” → “Du kannst mit der Skizze gern schon anfangen.”: A separable verb splits only when it is the finite verb. After a modal like kannst it is an infinitive at the end and stays in one piece.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: You are welcome to start the sketch already.

    Show answer or example answer

Du kannst mit der Skizze gern schon anfangen.

Kannst is in second position, anfangen at the end. Gern and schon sit in the middle field and soften the permission.

  2. Put the words in order: diesen / du / Entwurf / für / kannst / loslegen / Nein

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, für diesen Entwurf kannst du loslegen.

Nein answers the question and does not count for word order. “Für diesen Entwurf” limits the permission; loslegen is casual.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; I will begin only with this first step.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, ich beginne nur mit diesem ersten Schritt.

“Mit etwas beginnen” takes the dative: mit diesem ersten Schritt. Nur repeats the limit that was agreed.
