The idea

German says you “have” right: “recht haben”, written in lowercase in current spelling (capital Recht is also accepted). The point follows mit + dative. “Jemandem recht geben” (to concede someone is right) takes a dative person. “Berechtigt” (justified) describes an objection; “in diesem Punkt” limits your agreement so the rest of the discussion stays open.

Other ways to say it

“Da hast du nicht unrecht.” – Casual understatement; concedes the point a little reluctantly.

“Das ist ein berechtigter Einwand.” – Neutral; common in meetings and emails.

“Da muss ich Ihnen recht geben.” – Formal and gracious; suits debates and meetings with Sie.

Examples

  • Mit dem Hinweis auf die Wartezeit hast du recht. You are right about the waiting time.
  • Dann sollten wir den Ablauf ändern. Then we should change the sequence.
  • Dein Einwand ist in diesem Punkt berechtigt.Your objection is valid on this point.
  • Bleiben die anderen Schritte trotzdem gleich?Do the other steps remain the same, though?
  • Ja, ich stimme dir nur bei dieser Reihenfolge zu.Yes, I agree with you only on this sequence.
  • Dann halten wir genau diese Änderung fest. Then let us record exactly that change.

Watch out

“Mit der Wartezeit bist du richtig.” → “Mit der Wartezeit hast du recht.”: English “you are right” leads to “du bist richtig”, which means you are the right person. Being correct is “recht haben” in German.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: You are right about the waiting time.

    Show answer or example answer

Mit dem Hinweis auf die Wartezeit hast du recht.

“Mit dem Hinweis auf die Wartezeit” opens the sentence: mit takes dative, auf here accusative. Then “hast du recht”, with lowercase recht.

  2. Put the words in order: berechtigt / Dein / diesem / Einwand / in / ist / Punkt

    Show answer or example answer

Dein Einwand ist in diesem Punkt berechtigt.

“Berechtigt” is a predicate adjective, so it has no ending. “In diesem Punkt” is dative and restricts the agreement to one aspect.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us record exactly that change.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann halten wir genau diese Änderung fest.

“Festhalten” here means to record in writing and splits into “halten … fest”. “Genau diese Änderung” stresses that only this change is agreed.

Use it today

In a club meeting, someone says the summer party starts too early for working members. Acknowledge the point and suggest recording a later start.
