The idea
“In diesem Fall” uses in + dative; “dann” is the short, casual equivalent. Wenn and falls both introduce conditions with the verb at the end; falls stresses that the case is uncertain. When the condition clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: “Falls er offen ist, bleibt …”. Die Voraussetzung and die Bedingung both mean condition.
Other ways to say it
“Dann nehmen wir eben den früheren Bus.” – Casual; eben signals acceptance of the situation.
“Sollte der Eingang geschlossen sein, fahren wir früher.” – Formal; the inverted sollte replaces falls.
“Wenn das so ist, ändern wir den Plan.” – Neutral; a general reaction to new information.
Examples
- In diesem Fall nehmen wir den früheren Bus.In that case, we will take the earlier bus.
- Du meinst, wenn der Haupteingang geschlossen bleibt? You mean if the main entrance stays closed?
- Ja, dann brauchen wir Zeit für den anderen Zugang.Yes, then we need time for the other entrance.
- Falls er offen ist, bleibt der alte Plan möglich. If it is open, the old plan remains possible.
- Genau, die Änderung gilt nur unter dieser Bedingung.Exactly; the change applies only under that condition.
- Dann notiere ich beide Varianten mit ihrer Voraussetzung. Then I will note both versions with their condition.

Watch out
“In diesem Fall wir nehmen den früheren Bus.” → “In diesem Fall nehmen wir den früheren Bus.”: “In diesem Fall” counts as the first element, so the finite verb nehmen must come second and the subject wir after it.
Try it yourself
Translate into German: In that case, we will take the earlier bus.
Show answer or example answer
In diesem Fall nehmen wir den früheren Bus.
“In diesem Fall” is dative after in and comes first, so nehmen follows. “Den früheren Bus” is masculine accusative.
Put the words in order: anderen / brauchen / dann / den / für / Ja / wir / Zeit / Zugang
Show answer or example answer
Ja, dann brauchen wir Zeit für den anderen Zugang.
Ja confirms, dann links back to the condition. “Für den anderen Zugang” gives the purpose with für + accusative.
Write this sentence in German: Then I will note both versions with their condition.
Show answer or example answer
Dann notiere ich beide Varianten mit ihrer Voraussetzung.
“Mit ihrer Voraussetzung” is dative after mit; ihrer refers to beide Varianten. After dann, notiere stays in second position.
