The idea

The pattern is “Das ist + adjective + von dir/Ihnen”, followed by a zu-infinitive that names the kind act: an etwas denken becomes “an meinen Heimweg zu denken”, with an + accusative. Other adjectives fit the same frame: nett, lieb (casual), freundlich (neutral). “Das wäre nett” uses the Konjunktiv II to accept an offer softly; the wenn-clause sends brauchst to the end.

Other ways to say it

“Das ist echt lieb von dir.” – Casual and warm; between friends and family.

“Das ist sehr freundlich von Ihnen.” – Formal; for neighbours, clients or people you address with Sie.

“Wie nett, dass du daran gedacht hast!” – Neutral to casual; stresses that the person remembered.

Examples

  • Das ist sehr aufmerksam von dir, an meinen Heimweg zu denken. It is very thoughtful of you to consider my journey home.
  • Ich weiß, dass dein Bus früh fährt.I know your bus leaves early.
  • Danke für das freundliche Angebot mit dem Fahrrad.Thank you for the kind offer of the bicycle.
  • Möchtest du es für heute ausleihen?Would you like to borrow it for today?
  • Das wäre nett, wenn du es nicht selbst brauchst. That would be kind, if you do not need it yourself.
  • Heute steht es ohnehin unbenutzt im Keller.Today it is sitting unused in the basement anyway.

Watch out

“Das ist sehr aufmerksam von dir, an meinen Heimweg denken.” → “Das ist sehr aufmerksam von dir, an meinen Heimweg zu denken.”: After “Das ist … von dir” the act is expressed as an infinitive clause, and that clause needs zu before the verb. Without zu the sentence sounds broken.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: It is very thoughtful of you to consider my journey home.

    Show answer or example answer

Das ist sehr aufmerksam von dir, an meinen Heimweg zu denken.

The main clause gives the judgement; the infinitive clause after the comma names the kind act. An meinen Heimweg is accusative because denken an takes the accusative.

  2. Put the words in order: Angebot / Danke / das / dem / Fahrrad / freundliche / für / mit

    Show answer or example answer

Danke für das freundliche Angebot mit dem Fahrrad.

“Danke für” takes the accusative: das freundliche Angebot. “Mit dem Fahrrad” uses dative after mit and tells which offer is meant.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Today it is sitting unused in the basement anyway.

    Show answer or example answer

Heute steht es ohnehin unbenutzt im Keller.

Ohnehin means anyway: the bike would stand unused regardless, so the lender loses nothing. Heute in first position pushes steht before the subject es.

Use it today

A colleague offers to drive you to the station because it is raining. Thank them with “Das ist … von dir/Ihnen” and accept with one polite condition.
