The idea
“Den Faden verlieren” (literally to lose the thread) works just like the English image; the perfect is “habe … verloren”. “Bei + dative” names the point where it happened. “Bis zu + dative” tells the speaker how far you followed, so they can restart there. “Wieder ansetzen” means to pick up again from a point.
Other ways to say it
“Jetzt komme ich nicht mehr mit.” – Casual; very common when an explanation speeds up.
“Wo waren wir stehen geblieben?” – Neutral; useful after an interruption, not only confusion.
“Könnten Sie den letzten Schritt bitte wiederholen?” – Formal and polite; asks for one concrete repetition.
Examples
- Ich habe bei der Reihenfolge gerade den Faden verloren.I have just lost the thread of the sequence.
- Bis zu welchem Schritt war alles klar?Up to which step was everything clear?
- Bis zur Prüfung konnte ich gut folgen.I could follow well up to the check.
- Dann setzen wir direkt danach wieder an.Then let us pick up directly after that.
- Bitte nenne den nächsten Schritt noch einmal. Please name the next step again.
- Als Nächstes wird das Ergebnis dokumentiert.Next, the result is documented.

Watch out
“Ich bin bei der Reihenfolge verloren.” → “Ich habe bei der Reihenfolge den Faden verloren.”: “I’m lost” translated literally sounds as if you are lost forever or physically missing. For explanations, German uses “den Faden verlieren” or “nicht mehr mitkommen”.

Ich habe bei der Reihenfolge gerade den Faden verloren.
The perfect “habe … verloren” frames the sentence. “Bei der Reihenfolge” is dative, and “gerade” means just now; “den Faden” is masculine accusative.
Put the words in order: Bis / folgen / gut / ich / konnte / Prüfung / zur
Show answer or example answer
Bis zur Prüfung konnte ich gut folgen.
“Bis zur Prüfung” combines bis with zu + der. “Konnte” is the simple past of können, used for modals in speech; “folgen” ends the clause.
Write this sentence in German: Next, the result is documented.
Show answer or example answer
Als Nächstes wird das Ergebnis dokumentiert.
“Als Nächstes” (next) is written with a capital N. “Wird … dokumentiert” is the passive: the focus is on the step, not on who does it.
