The idea

“Ergänzen” means to add something that completes a picture; the noun is “die Ergänzung”. In meetings, “Darf ich …?” asks for the floor, while “Ich hätte noch eine Ergänzung” announces it softly in Konjunktiv II. “Berücksichtigen” (to take into account) is the typical verb for the content. Keep the addition short and say what it concerns.

Other ways to say it

“Ich hätte noch eine Ergänzung.” – Neutral to formal; common way to ask for the floor in meetings.

“Dazu möchte ich noch etwas ergänzen.” – Formal; ties the addition to the current topic with dazu.

“Kurz noch was dazu:” – Casual spoken shortcut; “was” is colloquial for etwas.

Examples

  • Darf ich noch einen praktischen Punkt ergänzen?May I add one more practical point?
  • Ja, welche Ergänzung ist Ihnen wichtig?Yes, what addition matters to you?
  • Wir sollten auch den Rückweg berücksichtigen. We should also consider the return journey.
  • Dieser Punkt fehlt tatsächlich noch. That point is indeed still missing.
  • Meine Ergänzung betrifft nur die Anreiseplanung. My addition concerns only the travel planning.
  • Dann nehmen wir sie an dieser Stelle auf. Then let us include it at this point.

Watch out

“Kann ich einen Punkt addieren?” → “Darf ich noch einen Punkt ergänzen?”: Addieren is a false friend: it means to add numbers. Adding a point is ergänzen or hinzufügen, and dürfen asks for permission more politely than können.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: May I add one more practical point?

    Show answer or example answer

Darf ich noch einen praktischen Punkt ergänzen?

The question opens with “Darf”, asking permission. “Einen praktischen Punkt” is masculine accusative; “ergänzen” stands at the end as the infinitive.

  2. Put the words in order: auch / berücksichtigen / den / Rückweg / sollten / Wir

    Show answer or example answer

Wir sollten auch den Rückweg berücksichtigen.

“Sollten” (Konjunktiv II of sollen) makes a soft recommendation. “Auch” adds to earlier points; “den Rückweg” is accusative and “berücksichtigen” ends the clause.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us include it at this point.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann nehmen wir sie an dieser Stelle auf.

“Aufnehmen” here means to include in a list or plan and splits into “nehmen … auf”. “An dieser Stelle” means at this point in the plan.

Use it today

In a parents’ evening at school, the class trip is discussed. Ask to add a point about packed lunches and state it in one sentence.
