The idea

“Im Wesentlichen” is a fixed phrase with a capitalised nominalised adjective (das Wesentliche, the essential). Similar qualifiers are weitgehend (largely) and größtenteils (for the most part). Fehlen + noch names the gaps. “Einen Eindruck erwecken” means to give an impression; erwecken takes the accusative, and what is implied often follows in the genitive: den Eindruck völliger Vollständigkeit. “Dazugehören” means to belong to something.

Other ways to say it

“Die Übersicht ist so gut wie fertig.” – Casual to neutral; “so gut wie” means practically.

“Die Liste ist weitgehend vollständig, bis auf zwei Angaben.” – Neutral; “bis auf” names the exception precisely.

“Die Übersicht ist größtenteils abgeschlossen.” – Formal; suits written reports and emails.

Examples

  • Die Übersicht ist im Wesentlichen vollständig. The overview is largely complete.
  • Welche Angaben fehlen denn noch?Which details are still missing?
  • Nur die beiden Rückmeldungen aus der Außengruppe.Only the two responses from the external group.
  • Dann markieren wir diese Lücken ausdrücklich. Then let us mark those gaps explicitly.
  • Ich möchte nicht den Eindruck völliger Vollständigkeit erwecken.I do not want to give the impression of total completeness.
  • Gut, die Einschränkung gehört zur Beschreibung dazu.Good; the limitation is part of the description.

Watch out

“Die Übersicht ist mehr oder weniger komplett.” → “Die Übersicht ist im Wesentlichen vollständig.”: “Mehr oder weniger” exists in German but often sounds dismissive, as if you did not really care. For a precise status, im Wesentlichen or weitgehend is clearer.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The overview is largely complete.

    Show answer or example answer

Die Übersicht ist im Wesentlichen vollständig.

“Im Wesentlichen” stands between ist and vollständig and limits the claim. Wesentlichen is capitalised because it is nominalised.

  2. Put the words in order: aus / Außengruppe / beiden / der / die / Nur / Rückmeldungen

    Show answer or example answer

Nur die beiden Rückmeldungen aus der Außengruppe.

An elliptical answer without a verb: “es fehlen” is understood. Aus + dative gives the source: aus der Außengruppe.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; the limitation is part of the description.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, die Einschränkung gehört zur Beschreibung dazu.

Die Einschränkung is the subject. “Dazugehören zu” takes the dative: zur Beschreibung, with the prefix dazu at the end.
