The idea
“Sich lohnen” has the thing as subject: der Umweg lohnt sich (nicht). Für + accusative names the person or the reason: für mich, für diesen Unterschied. “Etwas ist mir wichtig” takes a dative person; the comparative wichtiger compares priorities. The Konjunktiv II past, “wäre wichtiger gewesen”, describes another person’s different preference politely.
Other ways to say it
“Das ist mir den Umweg nicht wert.” – Neutral; wert with a dative person and accusative effort.
“Dafür fahre ich nicht extra los.” – Casual; extra means specially for that reason.
“Der zusätzliche Aufwand steht für mich in keinem Verhältnis.” – Formal; says cost and benefit do not match.
Examples
- Für diesen kleinen Unterschied lohnt sich der Umweg für mich nicht. For me, that small difference is not worth the detour.
- Dann nehmen wir das nähere Geschäft?Then shall we use the nearer shop?
- Ja, die gesparte Zeit ist mir wichtiger.Yes, the time saved matters more to me.
- Für mich wäre der Preisunterschied wichtiger gewesen. For me, the price difference would have mattered more.
- Dann haben wir einfach unterschiedliche Prioritäten. Then we simply have different priorities.

Watch out
“Der Umweg ist nicht wert für mich.” → “Der Umweg lohnt sich für mich nicht.”: English “not worth it” leads to a bare wert, but wert needs an object (es, den Aufwand). The natural verb for this judgement is sich lohnen.
Try it yourself
Translate into German: For me, that small difference is not worth the detour.

Für diesen kleinen Unterschied lohnt sich der Umweg für mich nicht.
The reason comes first, so lohnt is second and sich follows. “Für mich” limits the judgement; nicht stands at the end to negate the whole statement.
Put the words in order: die / gesparte / ist / Ja / mir / wichtiger / Zeit
Show answer or example answer
Ja, die gesparte Zeit ist mir wichtiger.
Gespart is the participle used as an adjective: die gesparte Zeit. Mir is dative with wichtig, and wichtiger compares the two priorities.
Write this sentence in German: Good; this time we will decide based on the available time.
Show answer or example answer
Gut, wir entscheiden diesmal nach der verfügbaren Zeit.
“Nach etwas entscheiden” takes nach + dative: nach der verfügbaren Zeit. Diesmal shows that the choice is only for this occasion.
