The idea

“Lass uns + infinitive” addresses one person on du terms; with several people use “Lasst uns”, and with Sie “Lassen Sie uns”. Nacheinander means one after the other; “der Reihe nach” is a close synonym. Durchgehen is separable but stays whole at the end after lass uns. “Zuerst …, danach …” orders the steps; danach can stand without a verb when the verb repeats. “Dran sein” or “drankommen” means it is someone’s or something’s turn.

Other ways to say it

“Eins nach dem anderen, bitte.” – Neutral and short; a common way to slow things down.

“Gehen wir das der Reihe nach durch.” – Neutral; suits meetings and planning talks.

“Lassen Sie uns die Punkte bitte einzeln besprechen.” – Formal Sie version; einzeln means individually.

Examples

  • Mit welcher Frage möchtest du anfangen?Which question would you like to start with?
  • Zuerst klären wir den Ort, danach die Uhrzeit.First let us clarify the place, then the time.
  • So verliere ich auch weniger leicht den Überblick. That also makes it less easy for me to lose track.
  • Wenn der erste Punkt klar ist, kommt der zweite dran.Once the first point is clear, it is the second point’s turn.

Watch out

“Lass uns die Fragen eins nach eins durchgehen.” → “Lass uns die Fragen nacheinander durchgehen.”: “One by one” is not copied word for word. German says nacheinander, der Reihe nach or “eins nach dem anderen”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Let us go through the questions one at a time, please.

    Show answer or example answer

Lass uns die Fragen bitte nacheinander durchgehen.

“Lass uns” plus durchgehen at the end. Bitte softens the request, and nacheinander states the order.

  2. Put the words in order: danach / den / die / klären / Ort / Uhrzeit / wir / Zuerst

    Show answer or example answer

Zuerst klären wir den Ort, danach die Uhrzeit.

Zuerst first, so klären is second. After the comma danach stands without a verb because “klären wir” would repeat.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will note the answers in that order.

Dann notiere ich die Antworten in dieser Reihenfolge.

“In dieser Reihenfolge” is dative after in and names the agreed order. Notieren is a common verb for writing down briefly.
