The idea

Sonst means otherwise and takes first position in its clause, so the verb follows: sonst könnte, sonst wird. A comma separates it from the request. “Andernfalls” is the formal equivalent. “Ohne diese Kennzeichnung” states the same condition as a phrase with ohne + accusative. “Leicht zu verwechseln” uses sein + zu + infinitive for what can easily happen. Damit introduces the effect of an action.

Other ways to say it

“Markier ihn bitte, nicht dass ihn jemand weiterschickt.” – Casual; “nicht dass” expresses a worry.

“Bitte kennzeichnen Sie den Entwurf, andernfalls könnte er versehentlich verschickt werden.” – Formal; andernfalls and the passive suit written instructions.

“Wenn du ihn nicht markierst, verwechselt ihn vielleicht jemand.” – Neutral; spells out the condition with wenn.

Examples

  • Ohne diese Kennzeichnung ist die Fassung leicht zu verwechseln.Without that label, the version is easy to confuse.
  • Soll ich zusätzlich einen Hinweis ins Dokument setzen?Should I also add a note in the document?
  • Ja, damit wird die Einschränkung noch deutlicher.Yes, that makes the limitation even clearer.
  • Gut, die mögliche Folge ist damit verständlich.Good; that makes the possible consequence understandable.

Watch out

“Bitte markiere den Entwurf, sonst jemand könnte ihn weitergeben.” → “Bitte markiere den Entwurf, sonst könnte ihn jemand weitergeben.”: Sonst is an adverb occupying first position, not a conjunction like oder. The finite verb könnte must follow it directly.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Please mark the draft; otherwise someone might pass it on.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte markiere den Entwurf, sonst könnte ihn jemand weitergeben.

The du imperative markiere comes first. After the comma, sonst is followed by könnte; the pronoun ihn comes before jemand.

  2. Put the words in order: die / diese / Fassung / ist / Kennzeichnung / leicht / Ohne / verwechseln / zu

    Show answer or example answer

Ohne diese Kennzeichnung ist die Fassung leicht zu verwechseln.

“Ohne diese Kennzeichnung” is accusative after ohne. “Ist leicht zu verwechseln” means it can easily be confused.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; that makes the possible consequence understandable.

Gut, die mögliche Folge ist damit verständlich.

Damit means through this step. “Die mögliche Folge” is the subject; verständlich is the result.

Use it today

Your flatmate leaves the balcony door open before going out. Ask him to close it with bitte and explain the possible consequence with sonst and könnte.
