The idea

“Etwas anders formulieren” means to word something differently; “noch einmal” adds again. “Anders gesagt”, “anders ausgedrückt” and “mit anderen Worten” introduce the new version, usually followed by a colon and a normal main clause. A sequence with “erst …, dann …” makes dependencies clear. In the first person, rephrasing sounds polite.

Other ways to say it

“Ich versuche, es noch einmal anders zu erklären.” – Neutral and modest; “versuchen” softens the offer.

“Anders ausgedrückt: Ohne Zahlen gibt es keinen Bericht.” – Neutral; a common written and spoken signpost.

“Vielleicht sage ich es mal einfacher.” – Casual; “mal” makes the offer light and friendly.

Examples

  • Ich formuliere den letzten Punkt noch einmal anders.I will rephrase the last point.
  • Vielleicht wird der Zusammenhang dann deutlicher.Perhaps the connection will become clearer then.
  • Anders gesagt: Erst brauchen wir die Zahlen, dann den Bericht. In other words: first we need the figures, then the report.
  • So verstehe ich die Abhängigkeit besser. That way I understand the dependency better.
  • Mit meiner ersten Formulierung war diese Reihenfolge nicht klar.My first wording did not make this order clear.
  • Die neue Erklärung hilft mir bei der Planung. The new explanation helps me with planning.

Watch out

“Ich sage es in einem anderen Weg.” → “Ich sage es anders.”: “In another way” is not built with Weg in German; Weg is a path or route. The adverb “anders” already means in a different way.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I will rephrase the last point.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich formuliere den letzten Punkt noch einmal anders.

“Formuliere” is in second place; “den letzten Punkt” is accusative. “Noch einmal anders” closes the clause: once more, differently.

  2. Put the words in order: Anders / Bericht / brauchen / dann / den / die / Erst / gesagt: / wir / Zahlen

    Show answer or example answer

Anders gesagt: Erst brauchen wir die Zahlen, dann den Bericht.

After the colon, “Erst brauchen wir” is a main clause with inversion; “dann den Bericht” is shortened because brauchen wir is understood.

  3. Write this sentence in German: The new explanation helps me with planning.

    Show answer or example answer

Die neue Erklärung hilft mir bei der Planung.

“Helfen” takes a dative person (mir), and “bei der Planung” names the area of help, dative after bei.
