The idea

“Etwas nachholen” means to do something later that was missed or postponed; it is separable (Wir holen es nach). “Ein anderes Mal”, “nächste Woche” and “jeden Tag” are time expressions in the accusative without a preposition. “Es wird knapp” (it is getting tight) gives a reason softly. “Auf etwas zurückkommen” here means to take someone up on an offer.

Other ways to say it

“Können wir das auf ein anderes Mal verschieben?” – Neutral; “verschieben auf + accusative” means to postpone to.

“Gern ein anderes Mal!” – Casual and short; can sound vague without a follow-up date.

“Wollen wir das nächste Woche nachholen?” – Casual to neutral; suggests a time straight away.

Examples

  • Können wir den Kaffee ein anderes Mal nachholen? Can we have that coffee another time?
  • Passt es dir heute nicht mehr?Does today no longer suit you?
  • Heute wird es knapp, aber ich würde dich gern treffen.Today will be tight, but I would like to meet you.
  • Dann lassen wir die Einladung einfach offen. Then let us simply leave the invitation open.
  • Nächste Woche schicke ich dir zwei mögliche Zeiten.Next week I will send you two possible times.
  • Darauf komme ich dann gern zurück.I will gladly take you up on that then.

Watch out

“Können wir den Kaffee an einem anderen Mal nachholen?” → “Können wir den Kaffee ein anderes Mal nachholen?”: Learners add a preposition as with “an einem anderen Tag”. With Mal there is no preposition; the time phrase stands in the accusative: “ein anderes Mal”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can we have that coffee another time?

    Show answer or example answer

Können wir den Kaffee ein anderes Mal nachholen?

A yes/no question starts with the modal “Können”. “Den Kaffee” is the accusative object, “ein anderes Mal” an accusative time phrase, and “nachholen” stands at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: aber / dich / es / gern / Heute / ich / knapp / treffen / wird / würde

    Show answer or example answer

Heute wird es knapp, aber ich würde dich gern treffen.

“Es wird knapp” means time is running short. “Aber” joins two main clauses without changing word order; “würde … gern treffen” is a polite wish in Konjunktiv II.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will gladly take you up on that then.

    Show answer or example answer

Darauf komme ich dann gern zurück.

“Darauf” stands for the invitation and opens the sentence, so “komme ich” follows; “zurück” goes to the end. “Gern” signals real interest.
